Title: Otari MTR-10 schematics, where to get them?
Post by: mdainsd on November 12, 2011, 02:56:26 PM
Hello forum! I have searched and searched through the forum before posting this, but can any one point me in the direction of schematics for this machine? I have the service manual for it but in somebody's infinite wisdom it does not contain schematics.

My faithful machine has lost all illumination to buttons switches and VU meters. Also the tape lift is no longer working. Otherwise everything is hunky-dorry.

Thanks in advance:

I don't know of an online source for schematics.

I do have an MTR-10 manual with schematics and could scan the ones you need assuming I have them - I'm not sure if my schematics are complete or not. I'll make an attempt to look tonight when I'm at home and see how many pages the two areas you need cover. Some of the schematics are fold outs that cover multiple pages so that could be a complication - my scanner is limited to 8.5 X 11 inches. Scanning all of the schematics would be a project that is too big for me to take on right now.

I've had to deal with many burned out bulbs in my machine so, unless they all went at the same time, it might just be the bulbs are all open. Did you test the bulbs yet?

Hey Chris,

I'd like to get a scan of those schematics too.
I've decided to try and collect as many manuals/schematics for tape machines and post them in one place (I've got a lot of them already).

If anyone has both for the MTR15/20 I'd love to get those too.

Hi Chris, yes I checked the bulbs first, they are fine. I doubt the LEDs for tape speed etc all simultaneously failed. Your offer of any help is much appreciated! When you have a chance, definitely the lift circuit, then the lamp (transport mainly) and LED circuits would get me moving in the right direction. I just cant understand why they arent in the service manual. My 24 track machine has every assembly drawing and schematic you can imagine, but its not an Otari either...

I do have the schematics but had trouble with my scanner so I'll need to deal with that first. Since there is some interest in copies of these, I'll make scanning the schematics a bad weather project. I certainly support making these available.

My manual covers the MTR-10II and MTR-12II and there are separate schematics for the 4 and 2 track models where they vary (eg the meter bridge). The schematics are printed on thin paper and some of them have torn loose from the binder so, as I said before, I'm not sure I have the complete set. I've seen other manuals where all the schematics were missing. I suspect that an engineer may have purposely removed them from the manual to keep them safely on file or perhaps to keep them away from someone in the studio who damaged other equipment.

Mark - if you lost the lights to your VU meters at the same time as the LEDs, I wonder if your 7.5 VDC supply is out (maybe it's 7 VDC, I'm at work and the schematics are at home). I had to replace those bulbs and as I recall they are connected between 7 VDC and ground without any switches or other circuitry in between. I'll scan the relevant schematics for you a soon as I can.

The status indicators for the supplies all indicate good. Ive found the fuses on a board in the back of the supply and they all check good. I think you are probably on the right track with your thoughts. A schematic (or two) and a few minutes with the meter should run it down. I look forward to your scans when you can get to them. I really like my -10 but recently a Sony APR-5003 has caught my eye LOL. Then I could relegate the -10 to backup duty and off the 5050 I have. Fun hobby huh?

My manual covers the MTR-10II and MTR-12II ...

Chris,

I am also in favor of making these (and other) schematics available. I've had trouble finding schemos for my MTR-20 as well.

If you'd be willing to send me your manual I'd be willing to have the whole thing professionally scanned at my expense, including the foldouts, and then send your manual back. If you wish to take me up on this, please email me: paul at tapeproject dot com.

I've got the first two scans done and both are overviews which contain large blocks that refer to another schematic page for a component level schematic of that block. I've put the schematics at http://home.earthlink.net/~kawcvd/mtr-10_12_schematics/ and I'll maintain this for the foreseeable future. Some parts of the scans are a bit hard to read but they are that way in the original.

The two scans are:

 "Audio control assembly" (http://home.earthlink.net/~kawcvd/mtr-10_12_schematics/audio-control-assy-cb2810a.gif)

 "Tape transport Assembly" (http://home.earthlink.net/~kawcvd/mtr-10_12_schematics/tape-transport-assy-t00250c.gif).

If anyone has an urgent need for a specific schematic, please let me know. The best way to refer to a specific schematic is by part name and number if it's known. On the schematics above, component level schematics are referenced in this manner in the largest type size.

Mark-
I was wrong about the VU lights in that they are powered by 7 VAC (not DC).

Looking over the schematics, I believe the tape lifter solenoid is labeled "shifter sol." on the "tape transport" schematic and is connected to "mother PCB assy" so I'll scan that one next. I'll also put the "power supply hookup pcb assay" and "power supply PCB assy" at the top of the list.

Thanks Chris,
Just so you know, I copied the two pages to pdf's and I'm able to zoom in till some of the components are the size of a matchbook and it still looks pretty good.
Nice scan!

Well.... voltage present to supply the lifter solenoid, but no pull down happening to make it operate.

If possible, I guess the next scans I could really use are the mother board and the Transport control card?

Thanks in advance.

Two more scans:

 "Mother PCB" (http://home.earthlink.net/~kawcvd/mtr-10_12_schematics/mother-pcb-2-channel-pb75s0a.gif)

 "Transport Control PCB" (http://home.earthlink.net/~kawcvd/mtr-10_12_schematics/transport-control-pcb-ob44t0a.gif).

*edit. Well narrowed it down to the transport control board. Uggg, now I get to hunt for one of those elusive extender boards.

Did you ever get all the Otari MTR 10 schematics you wanted.    I have a set, a little more than 12 MB pdf file.  Too big to attach here, but I can email if needed.

I have a pretty tight copy of the MTR-10 schematics, 58 meg though...  I also have a nice copy of the user manual with a lot of info for checking and testing various systems.  AFA the lamps, I had to replace all the lamps in my MTR-10 and MX5050, I think I bought them from digi-key, I believe, think I sent Steve the order numbers on that particular part

Gkar, I have an MTR12 (1/2" 4-track headstack) and would LOVE a copy of your manual/schematics. Can you email them to me?

Thanks so much.

Reed, emailed you.  I think the file is too large to email, any suggestions?

Hey Randy,

If you wish to share large files, it's best to get a free account at one of the file sharing sites like Mediafire (there's a ton out there now). You can upload the files (pictures, music or text) then copy and paste the "sharing link" to emails, forums, just about anywhere you like.
It's well worth having one of these accounts (I think I have about 4 each one dedicated to different media types so I don't get confused).

Hi Gkar -- we spoke offline a bit, and I suggested YouSendIt.com, but I forgot to mention that YouSendIt.com also has a section where you can upload files, then have a link to share here for everyone interested in the schematics. Or you could use MediaFire or whatever suits your tastes. Sounds like a lot of us could use them! Thanks!

Bump

I have the MTR-10 II C machine.  I downloaded the manual from the berklee music school site.  Not sure if it applies to the (II) model which I have or not.  Regardless it does not include any schematics :-(.  If someone here has a manual (pdf) and/or the schematics for this machine (mark or gkar perhaps??) could you give me a shout?

Thanks,
Paul

Otari apparently made small changes over many different releases of the MTR-10/12, e.g.  A,.. J and finally the II model.   These are mostly minor changes in the electronic circuits.  I don't think it will be much of a problem to use any generation of the manual.   The schematics I have are for the N generation of the original (not II) version.   If you give me an email, I can send them directly to you.   The file is about 50 MB.  Good copies of the narrative portions of the manual are available on the analogrules site and well as others.
