Thank you Steve. I am familiar to open reel decks I have a Technics RS1500 and ordered a tape path modification kit. I can do only this kind of mechanical things but not the electronics. I have also calibrated the Technics according to RMGI tapes it is good when the bias and eq at 2/2 position. 1500 has at least 3 modes for bias and eq. But 1520 have fine tune knobs additionally to these 3 modes.

Hi,
I am planning to buy an OTARI MX-5050 BIII but I found an MX55 and the seller send me the pictures of the machine. I didnot see any bias, eq adjustment switch like 5050 on the front panel. How the bias, eq adjustments are made on MX55 ? I've checked the OTARI web site for discontinued products but there is only a presentation of the deck. Any information will be appreciated.

Best regards.

Tape Project Machines / Re: Tape path mod kit backlog

I've seen this tape path upgrade kit maybe 2-3 years ago while looking at the pictures in the tape project web site, especially the bearings and the ceramic flanges were impressed me . When I have asked if I can buy at that time I was informed that they are only available for tape project members machines. Those days I had also problem with the textile breakpads and solved this problem replacing the textile breakpads with leather ones adjusted the tension with a spring scale according to the service manual and somebody from bottlehead told me leather pads can be useful. Up to now I am happy with the breaks.

In June I saw that the upgrade kit is on sale and on 18.June.2012 I have ordered a tape path upgrade kit for my Technics RS1500. I am still waiting for the shipment. I also sent an email and asked a question about shipping (I am living in Turkey and want to know how to pay the shipping cost) but they didnot reply me up to now.

Best regards

Why TapeProject chose DIN instead of NAB what is the advantage of DIN over NAB?

General Discussion / OTARI MX5050 BIII 2
« on: July 28, 2009, 06:14:58 AM »
Hello, I decided to buy a brandnew OTARI MX5050 BIII 2. I am still using a Technics RS1500US and I have many reels recorded with this machine. New OTARI machines are not equipped with NAB and DIN switch like the old versions. New ones have only one standard NAB or DIN. So which one is preferable? Thank you.

General Discussion / Bias, Eq settings for Technics RS 1500US
« on: April 29, 2009, 03:42:34 AM »
Hi, in the operators manual there  are some reference bias and eq settings for different tape brands. For RMGI SM 468 and SM 900 which settings are suitable while recording? I am using SM900 tapes and some times I feel good when Bias and Eq selected 2. Sometimes I think it is better to keep Eq 1, and Bias 2.

Ok. Page 31 of service manual talk about erase current. I thought that there should be a problem with the erase current. Technics says test the channels one by one and adjust them by using the same adjustment point and adjust the current to the desired value. Since there is only one adjustment point at the end I decided to adjust both of the channels at the same time. Also in the text Technics says measure voltage at point A and there is also a figure numbered as 38 showing the test equipment connection. In the figure test equipment is shown as connected to the point ER instead of point A. I 've connected the voltmeter to point ER but I can't read something similar written in the manual then I switch to the point A and this point was giving me similar V readings asTechnics says in the manual. Before adjustment/measurement: Line in level controls to minimum, tape speed selector to 38 position, set the rec mode selector on and put the unit into rec mode.
  • Bias selector position 1: Value read on voltmeter is around 65mv so erase current is 65mA for the given formula. Adjustment point VR501
  • Bias selector position 2: Value read on voltmeter is around 71mv.Adjustment point VR502.
Bias selector position 3: Value read on voltmeter is around 78mv.Adjustment point VR503.

As a safety before touching to the adjustment points record the original Voltage readings for 3 bias positions for each channel Left and Right. If something goes wrong it is easy to go back. Here I don't have any Technics service so I did this trial and error job by using the service manual. I am a metallurgy engineer and I don't understand electronics can't change any parts by soldering etc. but I can measure and adjust things like this, so any kind of help is appreciated. If you think that I did something wrong please let me know. 2 months ago I have corrected my Nakamichi DRAGON s NAAC (nakamichi auto azimuth correction) problem by the help of WillyHermann Services.

I have fixed the problem. A service manual and a Multimeter is enough to overcome. If someone need detail information please ask me.

General Discussion / Technics RS1506
« on: April 24, 2009, 05:12:46 AM »
Hello, I have a Technics RS1500 US, today a secondhand audio equipment seller asked me if I'd like to buy a 1506. I know the differences of 1500 and 1506, other then the head block the rest of the machine is same. What is the worthy price for a cosmetically very good and very well functioning 1506?

General Discussion / Technics RS1500US Erase Problem.
« on: April 15, 2009, 12:34:36 AM »
Hello all, I am new in this forum and I need help for my Technics RS1500US. I have an erasing problem with the machine. When I erase the tape regardless of the tape brand (I have quantegy, RMG, and Ampex tapes) I can hear the un erased music when I turned the volume of the amplifier to loud levels. I cannot erase the recorded signal completely. I have the service manual but I don't know how to handle the problem. Any kind of help is appreciated.

Regards.
