The Number White / Re: Jacqui's documentary

The ArtiDocs folks are doing a great job with the documentary. I can't wait to see the final when it is complete.

There was a painful reminder of making difficult priority choices in the interview with Romo. The BMW GS 1200 is my dream bike; instead I just keep buying more Tape Project tapes.

Keith and I finally got a chance to get together and transfer the tapes for both Church Windows and Nojima Plays Liszt. We'll get started duplicating Church Windows next week, so it will probably be the next title shipped. Unless the Clifford Brown is ready sooner. I'll let Dan update you when it gets a little closer.

Woo-hoo! This is great news, and I'm sure everyone who purchased these titles can hardly wait.

Thanks for the update!

Oh and where's that $57K check for the table-not to mention the table is what, 4x the price of the tape deck (assume it was the top level UHA Tascam)?

Exactly my thoughts, Myles--my joyous sonic experiences with tape makes me think these super 'tables are obscenely overpriced. Something is just wrong!

Itchin' to know like the rest of you guys--what's next and when? I know TP-014 from a previous post by DocB is going to be about the last to ship, but how about 18 or 20 which are also left on my subscription? Any of those would be very welcome!  ;-)

As I said in my recent Service Resources post regarding Athan's work on my A80, I couldn't be happier with the bearings they put in. Where he sources them, I do not know, but I have experienced no untoward sonic effects as Steve Koto mentioned in his Technics "better" bearing story. My guess is that the bearings Athan uses for the Studer A80 are true analogues (no pun intended) of the original bearings employed in the A80.

Service Resources / Praise for Athan
« on: June 26, 2010, 02:32:30 PM »
All,

A few weeks ago one of the four tension rollers on my Studer A80 RC MK II started making a little noise during FF and rewind. I knew Athan Corp. offered replacement bearings and I thought of doing just the offending one myself, but I decided to use this event as an excuse to send in my capstan motor, too, for a complete rebuild. My machine's serial number apparently dates the unit to about 1982 and I thought it doubtful such a complete service had ever been done on it. With only about 2800 hours on the clock, age alone made me think it would be wise to get the bearings and seals replaced--plus, George sandblasts the capstan's shaft to look like new as part of the rebuild. So, about two weeks ago I packaged up both sets of tension rollers and the capstan motor and off they went to Athan.

Yesterday everything came back and boy am I one happy customer. The rollers and motor were just pristine, and the transport now seems silkier than ever. I am ecstatic with George's professional, quality work, and grateful such a resource exists. To me, this last little bit of tweaking has allowed me to feel I have traveled back to 1982 and picked up a brand new machine. To celebrate the completion of the project, I spooled up TP-016 and sat back for an evening of sonic bliss. What a fun hobby this is!

Here are some pictures of the work done by Athan. Check it out!

General Discussion / Fabric cover for Studer A80
« on: June 19, 2010, 12:39:53 PM »
Hello everyone--

I just finished a fun project to make a fabric cover for my Studer A80 RC MK II. Not being able to sew, I carefully measured the unit on its stand, bought some fabric, and asked a friend who is a capable sewing machine operator to make it for me. I was very happy with the result, but felt it needed one more thing to make it complete--a logo. So, I took a digital photograph of the silkscreened logo on the deck's faceplate, enlarged it, and then mirror-imaged it in Photoshop. I then printed it on a sheet of iron-on transfer paper for inkjet printers. Ironing it onto the cover was easy. You can see the final result on my Studer A80 web gallery. Scroll all the way to the last two images to view it:

I've also made the mirror image photograph available for anyone who would like to download it for themselves:

Have fun--

Charles--

I'm sure DocB or Paul will clarify their availability, but I did see a TP release on 1/2-inch tape at CES this past January and, not surprisingly, it sounded fabulous. All I said is, "Make it stop! I can't go there!"

Just fantastic, Steve! Can you imagine how fun it would have been to have worked there? I play the piano every day and compose pieces that will never see the light of day outside my living room, but I bet I could have had some make it to a broadcast had I worked in that lab! And all those beautiful vintage R2R machines including the A80... It's all just too much!

Interesting thread as an A80 RC Mk II owner. Also, I want to unequivocally state how much I love the thing...  :-)

TP-016 is packed and we are just awaiting final approval of the artwork, which I will probably have today or tomorrow. So it should begin shipping in the next day or two.

Thanks, Doc! This will be a fun one. Just to be on the cheeky (and greedy!) side, could you give us an update on when you think TP-014 might be ready? It'll be fun to get some classical in this mix, too--

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: Another historical "tidbit"

Charles--There's something very special about the Audiophile LPs (Like Yellow Dog Blues and Doc Evans at the Gaslight --a live recording) and I'm not sure we've ever really heard them correctly since Nunn seemed to use his own eq curve for his recordings. Don't know what it is but there is a magical transparency and resolution on the old Audiophile LPs even if they tend to be a little bass shy.

This thread prompted me to find the Doc Evans at the Gaslight Audiophile-label LP and wow--you're not kidding! I'm not sure how a non-RIAA curve can work so well in a modern system, but this album is all smiles. Bienville Blues is just wonderful.

This Forum is fantastic--not only do we share in an enthusiasm for the TP tapes for their incredible sonics, but knowledgeable people share in their discovery of gems like the Doc Evans LPs. Thank you!

Here's my gem of the day: If you don't want to feel like we're chasing our tails with our investments in high end audio sources and equipment, then DON'T go to too much live music... I just got back from a business trip to Austin, Texas, during which I made the effort to go to the Elephant Room on Congress Street to listen to live jazz. I am not exaggerating when I say that after one of the many sublime trumpet solos I heard, I caught myself with a tear in my eye. I'm not sure if it was because it was so beautiful or whether it was a subconscious realization that hearing unrestrained dynamics with pure, undistorted tone is probably just impossible with any reproduction system. I comfort this realization with the fact that I can put on a TP tape anytime and get close, versus the onerous (to me, at least) need to go somewhere like Texas to do better.  :-)

Many of you may have seen this, but I found the first 16 minutes particularly interesting. I still think the Tape Project tapes sound wonderful, though...
