Title: Studer A80 - horizontal or vertical mount?
Post by: microstrip on April 09, 2010, 05:35:09 PM
What would be the position to operate a Studer A80, the vertical or the horizontal one? I saw that specifications are usually taken in the horizontal position:  can I conclude that this position will yield the best sound?

I have never seen a Studer A-80 in the vertical position.  All pictures I have seen are in the horizontal position.

One can put an A80RC on its top within its roll around stand to be in vertical position.  But this is to work on the deck and not for playing.  The A80VU models can be titled to almost vertical position on its locking pivots to be worked on as well.

A80s in horizontal position is their normal record/repro position.

And the wow and flutter performance is better in horizontal than vertical orientation. This is true of most tape machines.

Yeah, who needs gravity accentuating the wobbles in the rotating transport parts?

Cheers,
