Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Technics start-up problem
« on: April 06, 2012, 12:08:37 PM »
howdy, got a nice. clean 1500 a while back that has the problem of automatically starting up when the power is turned on and a reel is threaded up, engaging the tension arms, the machine, after about a second or two, will start playing the tape with any user actions!  Even the "record", along with the "play" light comes on, but there is no recording going on, just the tape playing.  Later on, this machine started having all kinds of tape handling issues, speed issues, etc., and so, using Rick's "shotgun" approach, I replaced all the 'lytics, and noticed that all of the 100ufd caps had leaked with green corrosion around their leads, that was an obvious issue!  Afterwards, the Technics has run perfectly with the exception of the aforementioned startup problem, the machine is still doing that, and I am guessing that is not normal.  Any ideas?  thanks

Tape Tech / Technics 1500 board problem
« on: November 07, 2011, 09:13:13 PM »
howdy, all.  I finally started up my 1500 recap project, this machine is very clean with virtually no head wear.  I have noticed a couple of caps having green goo on the legs, which is the electrolyte leaking from the cap onto the leads and corroding them.  Have done a recap of a 909, and that went well.  However, I have run into a bit of a problem on this machine insofar as the schematic/service manual does not quite match up to the boards I have in my machine.  In particular, the reel motor tension control board (which had a leaky cap, but I am replacing all) basically is mirrored from one side to the other on the ends, with matching caps, transistors, resistors.  The board number on my machine is marked ELNA 94V-0, on the service manual I have its 94V-1. The problem is that cap C813, which I pulled, was marked 50V1ufd, it's match, C814 on the opposite side is a 16V10ufd.  The circuitry the cap is in is the same on both ends, which makes me suspect a bad stuff when the board was made, and I have been having reel motor problems...  of course, that was more likely the leaky cap, but who knows.  On the schematic of board 94V-1, those same caps are the same value, however, that value is 16V33mfd, same transistors and resistors, but the cap values are different.  So, does anyone have a print of board 94V-0 and have the value for C813?  As I noted, I suspect a bad stuff, and that the cap should be a 16V10mfd, not the 50V1mfd I found...  thanks!

Prerecorded Tapes / reels needed/traded
« on: March 14, 2011, 10:21:24 AM »
howdy, all, need some reels for a couple of pre-recs that have bad reels, in particular:

Falla - The Three Cornered Hat - Albeniz Iberia; Ansermet on London LCJ80079
Sibelius Symphonies 4 & 5; Karajan on DGG  DGK8974
Mahler Symphony 9; Walter on Columbia M2Q 516

I have a fair number of empty pre-rec reels and boxes, just let me know what you need...  thanks

Prerecorded Tapes / tape pack deformation problems..
« on: January 17, 2011, 11:53:00 AM »
howdy, all, I was wondering about the problems inherent when a reel of tape packs onto the reel with some deformation showing in the packing, ie., it may manifest as flat spots in the pack or wavy spots and/or humping as opposed to normal arcuate packing, and what appears to be a radial lines/areas visible in the library wound, packed tape.  I saw some of this on Richard Hess's site and was wondering what effect this has on tape, both during play and for long term storage/use.  On one tape I note this effect, I do not seem to hear any playback problems, perhaps more careful listening will be needed, in others, there are audible issues.  Also, tapes having this problem also seem to have problems where the tape does not pack flat, there is often areas where the tape edges are high or low on a couple of laps, or a fair section of the pack will have tape edges alternating high and low as the tape packs onto the reel...  thanks

Prerecorded Tapes / Ravel/Andre Clyutens tapes commanding big prices!
« on: December 29, 2010, 03:27:03 PM »
what is up with that?  Are these tapes that good, or what?  The prices I am seeing on these tapes are pretty ridiculous for 4-track tapes.  That being said, over the last couple of months the prices in general for 4-track tapes has skyrocketing, any ideas why?

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Otari MX-5050 mods, impressive!
« on: November 29, 2010, 12:28:24 PM »
while I know most are oriented towards getting these machines with docb's tube preamp (and something I want to do after I get the finances straight), I have been talking with a studio person who gave me several upgrade options to the stock SS preamp.  I have done a few of them and the results were quite an improvement.  So for those who may be interested in these tips, let me know and I can post here, if that is OK...

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / pulling a reel table...
« on: November 29, 2010, 12:24:14 PM »
Hi, all, got a real doozy here.  posted on a couple of other sites, thought I try here as well...

howdy, got this one a couple of months ago, was used in a local (DC-101) studio, and looks it! Heads in nice shape though, not much wear at all, I have been working through this machine fixing one problem after another, the latest to rear it's ugly head is the adjustment of the reel tables, my feed table is too low, and the reels rub against the metal cover (what I think is called the "dress cover"?...), using the instructions, I got to the adjustment feature, however, the reel turntable support hub is frozen! In fact, there is a dent in the dress cover, it looks like someone at one time tried to raise the hub and dented the cover. Following the instructions in the manual, I note, and have seen on eBay, that the motors are mounted on brackets that attached to ? on the machine, in mine, the reel motors attach to a large cast metal top member onto which the various parts are mounted, motors will not come out unless the reel tables are removed. Any suggestions on getting the frozen tables off? thanks!

Prerecorded Tapes / removing adhesive from tapes help
« on: November 13, 2010, 06:46:26 PM »
Howdy, I have a couple of tapes that have some kind of adhesive on a portion of the tapes, you can see the tape "pull" as it is moving off the reel.  In one instance, the tape pull will cause the machine to stop.  Also, in another tape, it looks like the splice was put on the side facing the tape head, should I remove the splice and put it on the other side?  On that same tape, someone put a reversing tape with the reversing tape facing again into the tape head, and it is a little sticky as well.  This is about 7 seconds from the end of the performance, should I cut that tape and leader it at that point (this particular tape is relatively valuable 2 track RCA...)?  thanks!

Tape Tech / American Recorder tape cleaner
« on: November 08, 2010, 02:13:56 PM »
anybody use this stuff?  I got a package with some q-tips at clearance at GC, the bottle says "hexane", it looks to evaporate pretty quickly, but I wonder if this stuff is safe, any ideas?

Tape Tech / Otari switches cleaning
« on: November 06, 2010, 08:45:27 AM »
any suggestions on cleaning the dirty contact in the push button switches?  Mine are noisy, and, unlike the pots, I don't see a place to spray in the deoxit, thanks!

Tape Tech / lamps for Otari VU meters
« on: November 05, 2010, 08:38:43 PM »
Howdy, anyone know what the lamps are in the VU meters for the Otari's?  Need to replace the lamps in mine...  And any suggestions on how to get to them, I see them behind the plastic face...  thanks!

I believe that I read somewhere, maybe here, that one should not bag acetate tapes, mylar OK, but not acetate, is this correct?

Prerecorded Tapes / tape squealing, not backcoated tape...
« on: November 01, 2010, 04:36:19 PM »
We all have heard of squealing tapes, particularly of the backcoated variety, however, I just pulled another reel of because of squealing, Dolby copy on London, Ampex manufactured, this is the second of this type of tape, a black colored tape, that seems to squeal for no reason, did it on side 2 about half way in, both tapes the same way (half way in side 2), there is no residue on the heads/path, what is causing this?  I had a similar problem with RCA Living Stereo tapes years ago, got rid of them, ones I have purchased recently have not had that problem, although the dreaded "edge ripple" comes up quite frequently...  any ideas?
