Tape Tech / Tape Heads
« on: March 05, 2015, 05:51:36 AM »
I have a Nakamichi DR8 that I record TDK MA-XG tapes on. Lately I have noticed a white residue on the heads after recording. Anyone know what this might be?

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Tascam 38

Does anyone know much about the Tascam 38?
I already own a Teac 80-8 and have a chance to get a 38 for a fair price, so was wondering if theres any difference between the two machines.
Thanks.

General Discussion / Cassette tape repair
« on: January 02, 2014, 06:37:05 PM »
Hi chaps. I need help repairing a few blank cassette tapes. Are there any help guides anywhere that could get my TDK MA-XG  tapes back together again? The actual tape snapped inside their shells. I assume I would need a splice kit, though don't know where to get one right now.
Thanks.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: Ampex/Quantegy 456

I had an old reel of Quantegy 456 and there was some shedding. Have you looked closely at your heads to see whether there is some tape shed?  That would certainly cause problems.

Yes I regularly clean the entire tape path before each session.

My tech set up my Teac 80-8 for Ampex/Quantegy 456. I find the recorded sound a bit too "muddy" and lacking brightness. Is there any way to get a clearer sound by using different tape?

Don't know how to the the Signature thing sorry.
In answer to your questions, no the delay only happens when I press the play button.
The rest of the controls are ok.
Think theres only one speed on my machine.
The machine isn't new, had it since 1995 when I got it second hand.
Yes, it started all of a sudden.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Tascam 58

Got a problem with my Tascam 58. If you press "play", its a full couple of minutes before anything happens and the reels move.
Any ideas please?
Thanks.

Raw Tape / Mystery tape.
« on: February 11, 2013, 12:00:56 PM »
Anyone have any info on some half inch tape I have come across please?
Usually my 8 track takes Ampex 456 and would like to know if this mystery tape would be ok.
It has white coloured leader tape at both ends and has the words "Agfa Gevaert Magnet band" on it.
Thanks in advance.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Teac 80-8

What do I need to sort this problem please? The VU meters on my Teac 80-8 are different on playback after recording safe levels.
I would record electric guitar onto a track with the needle at 12 o clock approx, but on playback the peak light comes on at regular intervals.

Has anyone heard of a snake called "Klotz Monocore 16"?
Any good?

Raw Tape / Ampex 456
« on: January 07, 2012, 10:50:55 AM »
Having had my beloved Teac 80-8 fully serviced, I am looking forward to doing some serious recording. However, rather than buy new tape, I hope to use some old Ampex 456. Would it be advisable to chance the tape on my Teac?
I have ten reels of 456, two Quantegy 456, and two Ampex 406.
I started buying the stuff about fifteen years ago.
