Will Fred revive the Studer list?
« on: December 06, 2008, 10:56:58 AM »
I was definitely bummed when Fred Thal posted his decision to suspend publishing the Studer list (at least in it's present form). I can't say that I followed every thread since some were component/model specific, but I've learned a great deal from reading, then researching, most of the other topics of discussion. There's nothing quite like having Fred, Jay McKnight, Richard Hess (among many others) sharing their collective knowledge in an open forum. I'd noticed a drop in the number of postings with a month of silence here and there and I thought that was just  normal. I guess that Fred is deciding what the future of the list will be.
Has anyone heard anything regarding the migration of future Studer related discussions to another list?

Yeah, a bummer if it really was all over.  However, Fred seems to suggest something further coming.  Certainly there have been many criticisms on the list of the technology used and how the same questions get asked over and over again, as there is no easy mechanism to look for earlier answers other than to order & wade through the archives.  Hopfully we're just waiting for a rebirth of the Studer list in new format.

If that doesn't happen there would be a great need to create some substitute.  I have often wished for a nice website to place additional info & tips I learned & collected that the manuals just don't provide.  (like for one example, a static pointer to the Studer list server for all the manuals downloadable in pdf format)

I had discussed it with Steve in another thread regarding my reluctance to post any questions on the Studer List... The lack of participation is due to the strick rules and less than coridal flamings that hold back newcomers like me from asking questions.  Understandably there are repeated questions as mentioned above and people don't look up the readily available manual before asking the questions.

But the reality is that people who are truly analog recording professionals with intimate technical knowledge on Studer Master Recorders are slowly disapearing like an endangered species.  DIY hobbiest and people with day job like myself are the only growth potential and care enough to learn and ask questions.

Ideally, I'd like to see Fred revive the list and use more user friendly format such as the TP forum in more than one way.

yes, the reconstituted list is up. It will be geared toward the master recorders only. All will be welcome to join, but discussion will be directed toward professional usage.

To join the new list, go to
<http://bach.pgm.com/mailman/listinfo/studer>
read the description and follow the directions.

be warned that Fred still feels that the Tape Project is a fools errand, others of us are more agnostic about the idea.

Thanks for the heads up Alan.
I just got the email notice today and re-subscribed to the list.

I believe that the warning that Alan gave is a very good one. I have to admit to butting heads with Fred many-many moons ago but unfortunately, that wasn't exclusive to the Studer list.
Most, or all, of these professional lists have members who will react unkindly to any mention of audiophile tendencies. The mindset on them is very different from this forum. Believe me when I say that I've taken my "lumps" on almost all these lists. Now, I'm much more methodical when I reply to a topic.
I would suggest that your postings should stay on point and be of a more technical nature.
I think that I would've "stayed out of trouble" if I'd just followed those two items. It can be difficult to do that if you're used to making posts to forums like the Tape Project.
One of the fantastic things about this and other forums like it, is the enthusiasm that the members bring to almost every discussion. That kind of excitement is most welcome here and it fuels the imaginations of all who read these posts. However, some time when posting replies in these "pro lists", my enthusiasm has gotten the better of me and before I know it, that little "extra" statement (in what would've been an entirely acceptable posting) becomes the subject of ridicule.
Sometimes it seems a little like hazing or a right of passage, but I don't really think so. It's more like a sign stating "Don't Go There" that is passed from member to member to hit you over the head with.
There are plenty of places to discuss the less practical aspects of recordings and equipment and now I reserve those comments to forums where it is more appropriate.

After reading the above, you might ask yourself, "Why the hell would I want to post anything on a forum like that?", and you might be right. You could very well be better off just reading the discussions and never posting at all. But, if you're really interested in Studers and the technical issues regarding the use of magnetic tape as a medium, it's the place to be.

BTW Avoiding criticism and being careful are not features of my character. Occasionally I can still be seen wading through a hail of gunshots hoping to get one question answered.

One of the things we request on this forum is that a person speak for themselves. If Fred wants to express that opinion here himself it's fine. But we feel that it is not really in the best interest of the industry to offer opinions of others second hand, particularly when they could be construed as rather inflammatory by the readers. We like to keep things on topic here, too.

IMO it would do the owners of the Studer list well to realise that most of the so called master recorders (at least the 2 track ones) now belong to the dreaded "hobbyists". Furthermore it is far more likely that if real money is spent on maintaining/restoring these machines it is more likely to come from us amateurs.I doubt if any of us are true idiots. Through the nature of this affliction we are all ferocious readers who probably by now know a heck of a lot about things Studer.

Despite owning 5 Master Recorders I would not dare try subscribing to the List, much less posting there.I do have the archives of the old list though and find it a remarkable and sometimes amusing resource. I find it remarkable how many posts by some of the obviously most knowledgeable people who post there(Goran Finnberg,Kim Stallings etc) deal with very "audiophile" things i.e. sound of the different machines, sound of  capacitors ,sound of outboard repro amps etc.Very amusing when some "pro" tells the actual Swiss Studer engineers that they are talking nonsense about the machines they designed and built or an "expert" vehemently tells some poor real expert that there is no such machine as an 816 ,only to be rebutted by Martin Berner who goes on to say it was the best  sounding machine Studer ever built- priceless !
