Thanks for the heads up Alan.
I just got the email notice today and re-subscribed to the list.
I believe that the warning that Alan gave is a very good one. I have to admit to butting heads with Fred many-many moons ago but unfortunately, that wasn't exclusive to the Studer list.
Most, or all, of these professional lists have members who will react unkindly to any mention of audiophile tendencies. The mindset on them is very different from this forum. Believe me when I say that I've taken my "lumps" on almost all these lists. Now, I'm much more methodical when I reply to a topic.
I would suggest that your postings should stay on point and be of a more technical nature.
I think that I would've "stayed out of trouble" if I'd just followed those two items. It can be difficult to do that if you're used to making posts to forums like the Tape Project.
One of the fantastic things about this and other forums like it, is the enthusiasm that the members bring to almost every discussion. That kind of excitement is most welcome here and it fuels the imaginations of all who read these posts. However, some time when posting replies in these "pro lists", my enthusiasm has gotten the better of me and before I know it, that little "extra" statement (in what would've been an entirely acceptable posting) becomes the subject of ridicule.
Sometimes it seems a little like hazing or a right of passage, but I don't really think so. It's more like a sign stating "Don't Go There" that is passed from member to member to hit you over the head with.
There are plenty of places to discuss the less practical aspects of recordings and equipment and now I reserve those comments to forums where it is more appropriate.
After reading the above, you might ask yourself, "Why the hell would I want to post anything on a forum like that?", and you might be right. You could very well be better off just reading the discussions and never posting at all. But, if you're really interested in Studers and the technical issues regarding the use of magnetic tape as a medium, it's the place to be.
BTW Avoiding criticism and being careful are not features of my character. Occasionally I can still be seen wading through a hail of gunshots hoping to get one question answered.
