Tape Project Machines / I'm back boys!
« on: May 17, 2013, 08:05:17 PM »
It has been a long minute since I have posted anything here.  I took a break from the idea of tape for a long while and I have actually been away from my stereo all together for the last six months or so.  That being said, I have begun the process of purging equipment and rebuilding a nice simple system.  I have an Otari 5050 BII.  It turns and counts, but it needs a good once over by a good tech.  I am sure I want it for playback only and to bypass internal electronics and just have a R/L out to a tape amp.  I am not/can not do the deck work myself.

Does anyone know a good tech in the Baltimore/Washington area that can get my Otari ready for a TP album?  I am building speakers and and hunting down a couple of pieces of gear and have until about mid September before I need the deck done.  But I need somebody that understand s what we are doing here and can get me done for a reasonable price.  ($500>)

I would drive as far as North Jersey and Southern VA.

Thanks,
B

General Discussion / Tape Project based Open House
« on: September 24, 2009, 11:32:31 AM »
For any of you guys in the Baltimore/Washington Area, a local dealer (Columbia/Annapolis Junction, MD) is having a Reel to Reel workshop from 12pm to 4pm this Saturday where they claim to be demoing Tape Project Software.  The  real motivation behind this seems to be the sale of their project ready custom Tascam decks.  But I have done some business with them in the past and have had nothing but good experiences.  They have also shown a lot of excitement about working with Doc and the crew as partners.  Email me at [email protected] for details for now and once Doc gives me the all clear, I'll post it here.

Thanks guys,
I hope I did this right....

Suggestion Box / Trying again
« on: August 31, 2009, 09:18:24 AM »
I have been lurking forever, but it has taken me the last year to get my system back together.  Finishing my speaker overhaul this week and all that will be left will be the reconditioning of my Otari.  Then and only then can I justify the subscription expense in my house.

That being said, I see that you guys have worked out a deal with Staxx on the Staples Singers album.  Does that mean Issac Hayes "Hot Buttered Soul" is a possability?  I would buy that at any price regaurdless of system requirements.  Two runs and we are still way short on good soul music.  Anything from Gamble and Huff would be worth while as well.

Thanks for making this thing do what it does.

Oh yeah, you might want to give the guys at United Audio in Annapolis Junction MD a call.  send me a pm to discuss if you have time.

Suggestion Box / Just because I can't sleep
« on: April 20, 2008, 10:40:23 PM »
I should be in bed right now, but was (go figure) listening to music and decided to risk being labled mass market.  Here are a couple of obvious choices and one or two sleepers.

Dire Straits: Brothers in Arms  It has been done so many different ways...tape may be the holy grail for Mark's guitar
Steely Dan: Goucho  Read the credits list on this album.  They paid everybody to chip in.
Joe Jackson: Night and Day  Some eighties moments ARE worth reliving
Tears for Fears: Songs from the Big Chair    see above
Marvin Gaye: Whats Going On  If you don't get it, I guess not...

Not so obvious

TelepopMusik:  Breath    As I am starting to listen to smooth trans/techno on XM  I am realizing there are some 45 minute mental vacations to be had.  This particular title I happen to own.  Done by two french DJs that I believe use tape.

Jill Scott:  826   Hidden Beach Records first live album.  Done at Constitution Hall in DC.  Amazing acoustics.  She is working with an outrageous band, possibly one of the finest live recordings I have ever heard.  She takes you with her from beginning to end.  Great stories, great musicianship, great crowd noise great performance.  Sounds like the raw material is flawless.  Could only be improved by getting it out of my CD player and onto my Otari.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Modding non technics machines
« on: March 10, 2008, 10:57:54 AM »
Has anyone taken the time to modd their Otari or Revoxx decks to meet the sonic level of modded 1500s?  Is it even possible?  Using the seduction pre seems to level the playing feild from the repro end, but I would be interested in what it takes to make other decks sing until we can all find mint 1500s.

Tape Tech / Tape Speed
« on: March 10, 2008, 10:45:48 AM »
I think this has a simple answer, but it will help me from a recording standpoint.  What are the sonic advantages to recording and playing at 15ips v.s. 7.5 ips ?  7.5 gives me over 2 hours on a single reel (in one direction).  This would allow me to keep it 2 track and dense.  What am I loosing?

The goal is to get some very clean copies of live double albums recorded with the best possible sound quality.  On one, maybe two reels.

Be patient with me.  I am just starting this magnetic sickness.  :-)

Suggestion Box / Gamble & Huff
« on: March 04, 2008, 11:29:26 AM »
Just saw G&H interview with Tavis Smiley and they introduced something very interesting.  Leo Sax (producer I think) just put together an LP of orphaned Philly sound R&B hits.  A series has been proposed called "Rarities".  They are putting together compilations of overlooked classic music.  Issued directly to vinyl for analog to analog reproduction, CDs have not been produced yet.  Fledgling project should be available for licensing negotiation.  Masters have been procured.  What do you think?  There is NO classic R&B on the TP list!

If not this, what about "Hot Buttered Soul" Isacc Hayes on Staxx records?

Peace

Suggestion Box / question for Doc
« on: January 28, 2008, 01:43:18 PM »
Would most live recordings not be considered, due to length of program?  I was just daydreaming about "Bill Withers Live at Carnegie Hall" being given the TP treatment when I realized that it is almost two hours of music.  At 15ips it seems like that would be logistically a problem.  If you gave a short primer on the requirements for a piece to be considered, I think the suggestion box would be more usefull.....but I'm still gonna dream about I can't write left-handed, a glass of port and two candles.  It may just remain in the realm of vinyl.....(sigh)  :-)

Steely Dan - AJA

Bud Powell and friends - Live at Massey Hall

Pink Floyd - Wish you were here

Stan Getz - Getz and Gilberto

Hubert Laws - Family (way underappreciated)

Chuck Mangeon - Children of Sanchez

These are all LPs that I own and listen to from beginning to end.  Have never purchased the CDs because I can't imagine selecting tracks.  The Getz and Gilberto was my mom's and the original Verve pressing is so creamy (sorry, really the best word I could come up with) I can only imagine getting closer to the master would be unbelievable.  Live at Massey is just a historical once in a lifetime concert.  Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, Charlie Parker (billed as Charlie Chan) Max Roach and Dizzy Gilespy.  Booked in Canada the same night as the Joe Lewis fight, so they played to an almost empty house.  Parker is on a borrowed plastic alto and the recording was done by Mingus to study and practice to later.  Who knew?  It WAILS!!  The Laws piece is really good (read - not cheesy) 80s jazz flute work.  The evolutionary version of Ravel's Bolero is worth the price of admission.  Excellent work from Chick Corea.  Let me know what you think.
