MODERATOR
Myles B. Astor PhD
Senior Assistant Editor, Positive Feedback Magazine, Executive Editor, AVShowrooms.com

Audiophiles seeking the Holy Grail, the ne plus ultra of sound, need look no further than 15-ips/2-track reel-to-reel tape. These 21st century, real time duplicated, second or third generation copies, simply are as close as one can get to the original recordings. Today, more than fifteen companies in the US and abroad are now releasing both new and old recordings on reel-to-reel tape. The panel of speakers will touch on a variety of topics ranging from choosing a reel-to-reel machine, the ins-and-outs of tape machine electronics and matching the electronics to the tape heads as well covering the recording and duping end of the tape business.

As an aside, I'll also be a part of the Ask the Editors panel discussion on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 PM.

Well, I hope you're a subscriber! That would mean one of the 8 albums is yours. After those subscriber albums ship and we have more albums ready, everyone will be able to see how many we have in stock right on the web page and purchase one.

Another one still waiting. 😄

I haven't heard anything about the former but rumors about the latter. :)

Thanks! They also cut for some reason my tribute to Mike Spitz too. :( Maybe it'll be in the version up at AV Showrooms!

Will it be filmed? I would love to be able to experience this.

Yes it will. Peter @AVShowrooms is getting the raw footage. So it should be up at AVShowrooms as well as Axpona's site eventually.

General Discussion / Re: Question :)

Yep! :) I think we often forget that back in the Golden Days that two decks were run in parallel (which kinda evolved into digital recording and tape backup).

But my question is be how does Wilder know the difference in sound isn't due to degradation caused by the playing of the tape (how many times was it used to create masters--or were the tapes even stored in the same place?) vs. the head alignment.

Myles,

Not knowing the context of your question, let me just give a little info on the terms as I have seen them used. Traditionally, that is.

I was taught that a safety copy should be intercuttable with the master, so if the master was damaged it could be repaired by inserting a small section from the safety copy. This means, of course, that it's a flat copy, same speed, level and EQ curve as the master. Anything else--EQ copy, leveled copy, different curve for export, Dolby when the master wasn't, non-Dolby when the master was--would not qualify as a safety copy.

Think Columbia 30th St. Studios :)

Perhaps when the engineer is not wearing the traditional dress when he makes it? In general a safety is a copy of the master. Perhaps knowing who has coined this terminology might help shed some light on the subject.

The only thing I can think of is it might be a copy of a safety. Or it might be like our running masters in which each of the three masters we have is in fact a direct copy from the original master. In which case of course they aren't safeties in the traditional sense, they are all running masters of the same generation.

That is the traditional definition of safety. But there's another variation that came up recently in the context of a LP reissue :) I don't think it'll be immediately obvious but once I unveil it, everyone will facepalm :)

When is a safety tape not a  "traditional safety" tape?

Hello all,
I am about ready to setup my Tascam, but, I am thinking about replacing the playback head. After speaking with Mr. John French, I found out that the original heads on my tape deck are very low output. I was not aware of that initially. The present heads are all TEAC's. What I am wondering is whether these are the same heads on the Tascam BR-20? If so, is anyone using their deck with an outboard pre amp, and if so, are you having any problems with low output, hiss or hum?

Mr. French suggest I check out the Nortronic 400mH heads. He notes there should be a significant increase in gain without and increase in hiss levels. The problem is whether my tech will be able to mount the Nortronic in the tape head shoe on my deck. Right now, my tech has to send the TEAC head off to Mr. French for matching. We will see what happens. Again, I am wondering if any other Tascam user have problems using an outboard pre amp and if so, what are the problems? I plan to post a photo once I am set up and ready to go. Thanks so much all.

Bob:

You should talk to Charlie King! He put Nortronics heads in my Technics deck and they are a huge step over the stock heads! Better extremes, transparency and resolution!!!
