General Discussion / Re: Season's Barclay Crocker's
« on: December 23, 2010, 11:58:57 PM »
Playing the Dorati Nutcracker (the Philips, with the Concertgebouw) - very heady performance. Dorati was supremely experienced as a conductor of ballet and Tchaikovsky, although I believe there are times when he might have relaxed a bit. Anyway - terrific tape.

OK, things are looking up. Still hope to received Clifford Brown before Christmas....channel subscriber #79....79....79...

At one time there was talk about doing a "live" TP recording, at the SF studio, with paid attendees - any chance of that project being part of Series 3?

1. To receive the Clifford Brown tape before Christmas

2. To see the announcement of Series 3, also before Christmas

3. For health and prosperity in 2011 for everyone on this board.

I was really sorry to have missed it, especially given that I was a confirmed show until the last minute. One of my clients received a buyout offer on Friday, which was set to expire on Monday. Sunday was a day of many conference calls - I couldn't get away.

Events / Meet Jared Sacks of Channel Classics
« on: November 08, 2010, 09:35:17 PM »
Ok, this is not a Tape Project event - but many TP subscribers live in the Bay Area, and Robert Lang (who has written many thoughtful comments on music and recordings on both audioasylum and sa-cd.net) will be hosting Jared Sacks of Channel Classics at his home in Oakland on November 21.  Channel has become one of the top labels devoted to multichannel SACD and has focused on producing extremely well received recordings by artists like Rachel Podger and Ivan Fischer, as well as the infamous recording of Brahms "Piano Concerto No. 3".  Here is Robert's posting from www.sa-cd.net:

"I am honored to host Jared Sacks, founder of Channel Classics for discourse and music listening at my home, in the San Francisco Bay Area, Sunday 2 pm, November 21. Mr. Sacks? credits also include being a producer, recording engineer and editor for Channel Classics recordings.

Mr. Sacks is foremost a musician for a passion of music who also happens to make recordings. And to that end the Channel Classics discography includes more than 100 SACDs listed at SA-CD.net. An avowed supporter of the format, all of Mr. Sacks? SACDs are recorded in DSD.

In addition to listening to music and learning of Mr. Sacks? approach to recording and producing music he is, most importantly, interested in a fluid interchange of ideas with music lovers on a broad number of music topics.

So join me for this most unique opportunity to meet and discourse with Mr. Sacks.

For more information please email me: [email protected] "

Suggestion Box / Re: More on Large Band Jazz
« on: August 21, 2010, 10:47:05 AM »
Hmmm....Just finished listening to my LP of "Blues in Orbit" - good, even great music, but not absolutely vital like "Ellingtion at  Newport". Will spin "Jazz Party in Stereo" later.

The latest issue of Stereophile has a really interesting article authored by John Marks about a new book called "Ellington at Newport" and recommended the remastered version of the CD, which, by the way, has the recording of the actual concert, while the original release was actually done in a studio the following day and made to sound like a live recording. The remastered version sounds MUCH better than the original, and the live playing is that much hotter than the studio. More music too, and Gonsalves is miked in a much more impactful fashion. His solo is still a killer, and boy, would this make a great release in series 3. (I bought the book, too, but haven't read it yet)

Rock With Me Baby / Re: first impressions of TP-017, 'Rock With Me Baby'
« on: August 15, 2010, 12:54:26 AM »
I've got Reel B on right now - like Larry, I had never heard of Little Hatch before - but this is one helluva tape, both musically - great blues - and sonically. I don't know if this was considered by the gang as being a risky release, but sometimes risk taking brings great rewards, (a $500 tape of a relatively unknown artist? sounds risky to me)and I think this is one of those times. The music takes you back to Mississippi circa 1940, but in great sound.

Prerecorded Tapes / Re: Barclay-Crocker tape catalog?
« on: August 11, 2010, 08:22:02 PM »
Larry, the ones I mentioned were not in the BC catalog - they were missing from the broad data base that Steve had pointed to.

BTW, I still have your Jacqui autograph......thought you were coming to Palo Alto at some point?

Now that we are half way through Series 2......when will we get to hear about Series 3?

Suggestion Box / Re: The Robert Shaw Chorale "On Tour"
« on: June 13, 2010, 07:11:47 PM »
Choral works, huh? Well, there are the usual suspects by Bach (cantatas, Passions, Mass in b-minor, etc) and Handel (Messiah, of course, but a ton of others too - there are some who believe that Theodora is his best choral work). Mozart and Haydn masses, Beethoven's two (Mass in C and Missa Solemnis) and well as a few other works, works by Elgar, Brahms, Vaughan Williams, Dvorak, Mahler and just too many to mention.

Two that I think would be interesting candidates: First, something by Berlioz - Romeo & Juliet, Damnation of Faust or the Requiem (although that really requires surround sound to do it full justice). Thinking outside the box, perhaps something like Harmonium by John Adams - very accessible for a modern work.

Guess there is always Carmina Burana......

I believe I suggested Surf's Up in an earlier thread....way better than Pet Sounds, IMHO.
