I'll just throw in that there was an MTR-12 too, and that the MTR-15 is still available in a playback only format for archival use. After having a conversation with Otari's head engineer in LA I am interested in getting hands on an MTR-15. By his description it is rather ATR-100ish.

Doc,

Were you quoted a price for the MTR-15 that you can share?

It is not listed on the Otari site.

Wow, thank you for that information.  I appreciate you doing that.

The only problem is that I use the NAB/Flat positions to play my 7.5ips 2 track tapes, as well as mono records like Westminster's and Angel's.  I don't playback 78's at this time, but I may in the future, so even if it was possible to change values in another position, I don't know what position I could do without.

I use Russell Fisher's work as a guide:

Any more advice you could supply would be greatly appreciated.

At the top end we are in the development phase of a full on custom playback machine with built in electronics. Stay tuned on that one.

Has anything come of this yet, or is it a no-go?

I have a Harmon Kardon Citation 1 pre-amp with a tape head input.  I would like to know where the Turnover and Rolloff settings should be set to get proper IEC equalization.

The Turnover settings are:  Tape (NAB), 800 (RCA), RIAA, LP, AES (Columbia) & 78.

The Rolloff settings are: 0/Flat (RCA), -4/78 (FFRR), -10.5/Lon, -12/AES (Columbia), -14/RIAA & -16/LP.

Playback of NAB tapes, and adjusting for stereo and mono vinyl playback is pretty straightforward, but I am not sure where to set them for IEC.

Any advice would be helpful.

TIA, David

Does the tape have all of the music that is on the 2 record LP release?

Could those of you that have received this tape please post your impressions of it.

I'm sorry if this has been done before, but as you can see, all the previous posts have disappeared.

Thanks

Suggestion Box / Re: Symphonies, concertos?

Actually, the Elgar by duPre was suggested before; and I still think it is a great suggestion.  Personally, I don't have any interest in the vocal work on the flip side, so it I would prefer it to be paired up with either the Delius or the Monn concerto.

My personal preference for the Rodrigo is with John Williams playing and Barenboim conducting on Columbia/CBS.  It is a wonderful intimate performance with superb playing on both Williams and the orchestra's part.

Thank you for that link.

I have to admit that I do not have very many of Ansermet's recordings, so I will have to see if I have that one in my store's inventory.

the Ansermet performance, which is extremely rare on LP. One of the contributors in  Audio Asylum made an extremely cogent case for this performance.

Could you please post the link to that review.  I am not a member of Audio Asylum.

Thanks, David

We get more excited talking about doing special 1/2" 15 ips copies for folks who might be willing to truly go for it.

Have you ever done a direct comparison of a 1/4" dub to a 1/2" dub?  Results?

The Stokowski issue that I have is stereo.  It was originally released in a double record box set and the sound is very good.  It is more atmospheric than either of the EMI recordings, but it doesn't seem to have the dynamics that they do.  And you are right, the re-issue, which I think was done on Seraphim, has truly lifeless sound.

Here is another title that I would like to recommend for release.

And since the Tape Project guys have an "in" with the Reference Recordings guys, maybe a T.P. issue of R.R.'s release would be something that both would consider.

This is a work that I would love to hear on a Tape Project issue.

Here are three great performances, but I would be hard pressed to recommend one over another since they all have something to recommend them.  Sorry, I don't have the catalogue numbers handy.

Stokowski - Capital
Muti - EMI
Previn - EMI

I would be interested in other recordings that people could recommend.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: Modding non technics machines
« on: April 24, 2008, 06:36:53 AM »
All that said, Jeff Jacobs has plans for some pretty heavily customized Technics machines as well, that might incorporate our electronics in a single package.

I am no technician, but from what I understand, the playback head's impedance and signal are affected as you increase the wire length from the head to the pre-amp. So, I would think that it would be best to have the wire connecting the playback head and pre-amp to be short as possible.

So, if removing the old transistor electronics and replacing them with new tube electronics is possible, then I would think think this is the way to go.

We are working on TP-006 next. TP-005 requires some special treatment in duping that requires us to reconfigure the duping setup a little...

Can you tell us what the difference is between these two tapes since both are Decca's?
