This tape, as Steve states, was worth the wait. Simply beautiful. Beautiful!

Thanks everyone for the tips and options. I did find this place, too, and though they have to special order it, apparently RMGI can supply it.

General Discussion / Translucent leader tape
« on: August 13, 2011, 06:07:24 PM »
I have a Studer A80RC MK II whose light gate is set to stop the tape transport whenever it encounters clear, translucent or no tape. I really enjoy this feature as it prevents tape "slapping" on FF and RW and allows for accurate time indexing for songs on tape as the counter also does not count when such tape is sensed by the optical light sensor.

I used to source translucent white mylar leader tape from US Recording Media, but my last order contained an "updated" formulation that is completely opaque and, of course, prevents the A80 from operating as described above. Does anyone know another source I could try to get this type of leader tape?

Thanks in advance--

Tape Project Albums - general / Re: Jimmy Smith Tape

I can see the eyes rolling from our producers, and i apologize in advance, but since I work in an industry where every 90 days we're asked what we've done, I'll go ahead and what's the status of the Jimmy Smith tape again... It has been about a 90 days since it was last asked. ;-)

Please keep us posted! I've got a closet full of compositions over decades and always wondered how to move them forward without friends who are musicians. Very cool site...

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: Studer tape end sensor lamp repair

Doc--

The factory lamp comes with pigtail leads; we just crimped on the molex connectors and plugged it in.

Doc--I wish you were my neighbor! To fix my lamp, I ordered the factory replacement from Audiohouse. Simpler, but more expensive!

Are my pictures showing up? I saw them on preview but not after posting...

Tj

I could not see your picture(s) in the post, but if you right-click on the placeholder (control-click on my Mac), and choose "Open image in New Window," the photo displays. I'm not sure why this is happening but at least you can see it!

That is really cool! Everything looks neat and clean, too. Congratulations on creating an even more flexible tape machine!

Clifford Brown Memorial / Re: Our first Blue Note!

I just received my copy of TP-018.

Wow. Another home run, in my opinion. I love this music and musicianship--and the sound is just jaw-dropping! I just can't believe something that was laid down in August, 1953, can have the sonic purity and dynamics this tape has. Such a pleasure!

Thank you Tape Project!

Hey guys,

As a photo nut, I'd like to weigh in on something regarding Francis Wolff's images. They are simply stunning, and though I am a huge Leica fan, owning both the newest digital M9 rangefinder and a film M6, I'm pretty sure the Blue Note artist photographs he made were not done with one. I recall reading an interview with Michael Cuscana that Mr. Wolff used a 6X6 medium format camera to take these breathtaking images (a Rolleiflex, I believe) which makes sense due to their wonderful depth of field and sharpness.

I guess that means some of you have received the Clifford Brown tape? I can't wait!
