Tape Tech / Re: Seduction tape head mod
« on: August 15, 2011, 02:56:09 PM »
because the gain is often rather marginal with typical tape heads. That is why we developed the Eros tape head preamp - more gain, more sophisticated design, better sound.

Well that last statement ate away at me. And since selling my old linestage I had some $. So, I bought an Eros Tape Head pre, and somehow checked the 220V box, DUH!!!! So I have an email or 2 in to correct my mis-step. Now to sell a Seduction phono pre.

One nervosa down, what a hobby!

Prerecorded Tapes / Re: For Well Heeled Beatle Fan
« on: August 13, 2011, 06:02:31 PM »
Well I am a Beatles Fan and audionut. And 7 12 ips is important to me. So guess what commands the highest prices for most tapes - the 7 12 ips versions, especially in the Rock catagory since so many can be found duped at 3 3/4s . Now it's not uncommon to see Beatles tapes at the higher speed with Buy-It-Now at $150.00 or higher. Well I have been watching a boatload of tapes and have snagged Let It Be for $56.00 shipped. Three times my usual threshold but a deal in the world of 7 1/2 ips Beatles tapes.

Prerecorded Tapes / Re: Large quantity of classical and opera tapes

If you have Beethovan: Violin Concerto - Zino Francescatti - Bruno Walter on Columbia Masterworks, first play it then get the master tapes and rights to add it to the Tape Project list. This is a fantastic album and would be a super Tape Project addition.

Tape Tech / Otari head swap

I have a set of Otari MTR 10-II-C 2 track heads I'd like to install on my MX5050BII-2. They will mount to the 5050 headblock. They will need alignment and calibration. They are part # GH4R132 and GH4P133. Theses are wide (fill the shields) chrome finish with thin horizontal lines discerning the tracks beauties. Is this an upgrade? Crossing fingers and hoping here.

I buy cool old reel for the boxes. Ampex 100A, 111, etc. look great framed.

Would be great on an Otari machine. Hmm... especially in kit form.

I recently bought a Tascam 32 and as far as I can tell, I'm the first guy on the internet to discover it is both NAB and IEC compatible!  From everything I've read online it seems that Tascam set the 32 up in the USA for the NAB standard and in Europe/Japan for the IEC standard.  What I have not been able to find until last night anyhow is that the end user can "make the switch" themselves.

According to the user and to the service manual for my 32, you CAN convert the deck from NAB to IEC by switching some jumpers on the internal amp.

From page 39 in the manual of the 32:
Note:  If necessary, inter-switching between the NAB and IEC standards can be accomplished by simply removing and repatching the jumper wires on 5 points of the amplifier.  The details are explained as a note on the schematic of the amplifier section.

From schematic of amp section:
For NAB Standard: With the A, B, and C jumper connections being disregarded, jumper D is connected to the terminal side of C129 and jumper E to the terminal side of C128.

For IEC Standard:  With the A, B, and C jumpers in place, jumper D is connected to terminal side of C127 and jumper E to terminal side of C130.

Now, I have not tried this conversion myself, but it seems straight-forward.  This then makes the Tascam 32 a "tape project ready" machine as it is a half-track, 7.5/15ips/IEC compatible machine that can handle 10.5" reels out of "the box".  I hope this may help someone down the road because it took a bit of digging to find out!

Perhaps you could add a switch for NAB to EIC on the fly.

Tape Tech / Seduction tape head mod
« on: July 23, 2011, 02:51:14 PM »
I have a Bottlehead Seduction phono preamp. I want to convert it to a tape head preamp with NAB and IEC EQ. I have read the thread and noted needed parts, final cap values and such. I am just wondering if there are any real instructions available.

The seller described this as factory built. It came with the "Suduction  A guide to constructing the..." manual and Packing List dated 12/16/10, a 3X (11"x 17") picture of the non-C4S assembled chassis, another 11' x 17" with 4 different angle pictures and description of adding 1" standoffs to the transformer, a pink sheet detailing revisions 4-29-04 and a Sales Receipt dated 12/9/2010 where the suduction with C4s upgrade kit add up to 444.00 USD. It is meticulously assembled with C4S board over the input RCAs, but no standoffs on the transformer. I would think the tranformer 1" satdoffs coub be retrofitted due the the wiring being long enough the "stretch" the distance. Though said stretching would take them away from the chassis/ground plane. Is this a good idea? And how about the tape head mod?
