I also recommend Jack and JM Technical Arts in Nashville, TN.  He refurbed a ReVox E36 for me and was even able to supply a new faceplate.  A great resource for ReVox users.

Service Resources / Ampex Services in Chicago

Hello,

I heartily recommend Bob Cochran in Chicago for anyone considering work on Ampex machines.  Bob was recommended to me by Dave Dintenfass of the Ampex Mailing List and Tony Pretto of IEM, and did a great job modifying my Ampex 351-2 to provide both NAB and IEC equalization.  He also modified a pair of surplus Ampex 3200 duplicator units for playback use with another 350 transport I have, and I was very happy with that work as well.  Bob can be reached at:  [email protected]

I think Tony Pretto and IEM are already pretty well known to Ampex folks, but I also strongly recommend Tony for Ampex heads and mechanical work.  IEM's website is:  http://www.iemmag.com/

Both Bob and Tony may work on other kinds of tape machines, but I'm not sure.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Ampex 351 CCIR (IEC) Modification
« on: December 27, 2009, 02:20:00 PM »
Hello,

I have an Ampex 351-2 deck that has been modified to provide both NAB and IEC equalization.  Ironbut suggested that the details of that modification might be interesting to other forum members.  An Ampex document that details the required modification is available at the following link:  http://www.moshier.net/catalogues/Ampex_CCIR.pdf

I originally got the document from Dave Dintenfass of Full Track Productions in Seattle.  Dave is active on the Ampex mailing list, an all-around nice guy, and a good source for info about (and some parts for) Ampex machines.  He was also able to recommend a local tech in Chicago who did the work.  On my deck, equalization is switchable via the Tape Speed/Equalization switches on the front panels.

I hope this info helps anyone who wants to use an Ampex 351 to play Tape Project tapes.  I've had great results with mine!

Regards,

John Stover

I've got an Ampex 351-2 that's been modified to switch between NAB and IEC playback curves.  The modification was not expensive and the deck now works great with Tape Project tapes.
