Tape Project Machines / tape stage preamp question
« on: February 12, 2018, 09:35:40 AM »
I am presently using an Eros tape head preamp and it's been +/- OK....if I make a jump to the Tube Repro,  how much of a sonic difference
will there be.  There a very large cost difference,  will the cost difference equate to the sonic difference ?

Love some input...Thanks

If I may pass along a little advice... we do business throughout Asia and North America and we (and our suppliers) only use Fedex.  The ratio of problems to shipments with Fedex is extremely low.
Conversely the ratio of problems to shipments that we have when UPS is used,  is painfully high.
Fedex is the most expensive but absolutely the most reliable.

This advice comes from YEARS (too many) of experience

for what it's worth...

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: What hardware are you using?
« on: May 31, 2011, 07:25:45 AM »
I'm also using a Technics RS1500 ...but with "2" 1/2 track heads. a flux magnetics extended response head on the right side of the head block and a new Technics 1/2 track head on the 1/4 track side. This means I now have a choice of heads depending on the music (some tapes sound better with the flux magnetics head and some tapes sound better using the new Technics head). It's kind of like having 2 tone arms (2 cartridges) on a turntable which I can do on my Clear Audio Solution turntable.

The internal preamp has been by passed and I'm using a Bottlehead Eros tape head preamp.

It's being run through an EAR line stage preamp, a McIntosh 402 amp and Wilson Benesch speakers.

I'd like to eventually replace the EROS head preamp with the REPRO

And of course a TP subscriber...

Hi Steve

This is a great lead, thank you... I immediately tried to order on-line but there doesn't seem to be a trigger to
order anything. Any suggestions... did you try and order anything ?

Let me know.

Thanks

For anyone in Southern Ontario (Canada) or in the Northeast USA looking for electronic technical management and support I "HIGHLY" recommend Tom McCartney. He is a Studer technician and he spent some time with Teac as service manager.
Specialty is vintage analog and he has a published book "RECORDING STUDIO MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS"
An EXCELLENT and well respected rtr technician with the ability to scratch build any electronics from the ground up.
On top of everything else, a true gentleman to work with.
You can contact him by phone at (905) 301-3074 or by e-mail at  [email protected]

Thanks very much for your quick response...I will check with John French and find out how long it will take to get the new head from Flux Magnetics. As soon as he gets it in, I will send him the head block.  I'll give you an update when the work has been done.

My next step after this will have to be the Tube Repro to replace the Eros...

Hey Dan

As mentioned, we are very pleased with the sonic outcome with the new head, but as I can never sit still...what are your thoughts on an upgrade to the Flux Magnetics extended response heads. I am running it through the Eros. From your experience
what kind of improvement do you think I can expect.

looking forward to your input...thanks

Great news on the new albums !!  I guess there's no chance that you will be doing any demo events a little further east...

Hi Dan

I thought that the saga of our frequency response problem deserved a happy ending. Thanks to the tests that you and Sean did on my head block and your suggestion to contact John French at JRF Magnetics, we now have a "perfectly" working tape system. The 2 track head has been replaced with a brand new one and John relapped the other heads.

The sound is night and day....fantastic !... can't wait for the rest of our tapes to come in.

Many thanks to you, Eileen and Sean for all your help and support.

Hey Doc

Well we have tried just about everything (excluding a new play back head) and we are still in the same place. I would be grateful for a few minutes of your time on the phone.

Please let me know when it would be convenient to call and at which phone number.

Thanks

Hi Doc

Thanks very much for your suggestions and for your kind offer for Tom to call you. Changing cables is an easy test and I will try to do that over the weekend to
see what happens.... but based on what I am hearing, I am afraid that it might be the head and have asked Tom to see about picking up a new one for me to try.

I have high hopes and anticipations on what the sound quality should yield and will keep you updated on our progress.

hope you had a nice Thanksgiving !

Hi Doc and Ironbut

Thank you again for your continued responses and I will try to answer all of your questions

Confirmed that the response readings coming out of the Eros were the same from both channels.
I am using Chord (Cobra 2) 1 meter interconnects (not very expensive)  from the RS1500 to the Eros and from the Eros into my Line stage preamp and according to Tom McCartney (my technician and electronic guru) he figures they are about 15pF/ft
The Eros is always set to IEC
The tapes are definitely threaded correctly (also I know the difference sonically between the right and wrong side of the tape...huge difference)

I am not saying that it sounds like the wrong side of the tape is running...it just doesn't sound "open" and "airy".. The top end is
not clear...crisp. I get more response from vinyl and from CD. Somehow I just know (and can hear) that there is "lots" more on the tape that is not coming
forth.
I have asked Tom to see about getting me a brand new good quality play head but I just keep hoping that maybe it's something that I am missing.
Is it possible that I need to get a small eq built into the Eros to match the play heads output from my RS1500 (kind of like the elevator on my Graham Slee phono stage) ??

I'm willing to try anything at this point. Perhaps I could have Tom call Doc ?

Look forward to your further comments

Thanks again
jay

I just spoke with Tom McCartney, the technician that did the recent adjustment. He told me that the his readings were off
2db @ 10kHz and 3db @ 15 kHz.

Please let me know if this information is helpful.

Thanks
