Tape Tech / Re: Studer A810 BIN file for 25/91 version firmware
« on: January 07, 2020, 03:58:53 PM »
I had also inquired about sourcing the IC10 firmware BIN file to other pros and Studer users who had multiple A810s.  No one had archived the various firmware versions so far...

It had occured to me - the machines like Studers that used commonly available electronics parts for their boards in the 70's and 80's can be serviced in the future with vintage parts from other electronics gear and other Studers.  However, for the firmware - it will be hard to replace once Studer officially stops supporting the analog machines in 2010.   So until then, the firmware IP belongs to Studer and can't be publically archived and distributed.

For my original needs, fortunately, Angle from this fourm had offered to loan me the MPU board with the version of firmware I was looking for and soon I will rebuild the library of 25/91 version firmware BIN files.

With unfortunate demise of the Studer List, I am considering archiving collection of different firmware versions for Studer A810, A807, A820 and other models.  So, if you own a Studer recorder and want to archive your firmware, please contact me.  I may already have the BIN files but if not, I can help you extract the data and save them as BIN files to be used later to burn replacement firmware Eproms.

Hi ,

Sounds like the new bearing needs some adjustment or lubricant, or both.

You are right, it seems to be a bearing issue, there should not be any rubber band.
The replacement bearing I am using now is a SKF 607-2Z-C3 bearing and it is probably wrong type of bearing, the original one is a NMB SSR1970ZZ which I can not find at my site.

I have talked with the SKF bearing supplier today  and they said that there is a special SKF bearing SKF: Energy Efficient (E2) bearings (Low friction and high performance) and recommended me to use/try that instead since they run more freely with the same load thank the standard one.

The only reason I need the digital counter to be accurate in high speed spool is for the very useful search function the machine has.

Will get the new bearings (2) on Monday and give it a try .

Hi,

I have newly replaced the 2 bearings   on the counter roller since the old bearings were old and sounds a lot. The new bearings (made by SKF) are little stiffer since they are new but now instead I have a problem after the replace where the roller counter is slipping on high speed spool and the digital counter will report slower rate than the actual  rate  .
On the old bearings the counter was correct since the roller was much  freely rotated than the new bearings.

My question here , should it be a rubber band around the roller on the tape track of the roller ?
Or, could it be a worn surface on the tape track on the roller ?

Attached a picture of the counter roller.
Attached also a stock picture of a Studer B67 where a rubber band is around the counter roller
Last pictures show the roller dissassembled from the BTR-5

Thanks,

George

Hi,

I have newly purchased a used Otari BTR-5 tried to find a manual for it without any success,   have a question regarding how to thread the tape near the pinch roller.

Attached 2 pictures, need help on which picture shows the correct way to thread the tape around the pinch roller.

Also, some information where I can buy a operational manual for it.

Thanks!

George

General Discussion / Re: Otari BTR-5 - Operating Manual

Hello,

Looking also for the operation manual,  I have some issues I need to know about regarding the pitch control on how to change the value, also, on how to reset the counter.
Many thanks in advance!

Hello,

Looking for EPROM dump image  for the internal EPROM in the TC card which works with the old style keyboard TACA-TC, no matter which version 1.XX.
Many thanks in advance!

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: NAGRA T-Audio 30 IPS
« on: December 24, 2011, 03:14:29 AM »
Hi David and Joe:

Here's what you need:

www.mouser.com

Mouser #: 639-CR12600SE-T

Mfr. #: CR12600SE-T COMP-3-1 SOLDER TABS

Manufacturer: FDK Batteries (Formerly Sanyo)

Desc.: Electronic Battery 3V 1500mAh

Price: $9.65 ea.

For other Nagra T owners,

As soon as you disconnect the battery, the RAM loses all the codes and data loaded at power up and user entered values.  Sometimes it could be a good thing as Hani found out to clear out the corrupt data.  The machine will load factory defalut parameters and operational code at power up.   But if you don't want to lose the set up data, I would suggest you get a battery holder with two AA batteries and temporarily solder in parallel with the Nagra battery before removing the old battery.  You would solder in the new battery and desolder the AA batteries and you should be good to go.

Good luck!

Ki
Hi,
If the error code did not clear after replacing the battery, the main suspect will be the RTC Real Time Counter with RAM IC  (UK5 MC146818 http://www.cpcwiki.eu/imgs/b/b5/Mc146818.pdf   ) on the same board as the battery. It does two functions, responsible for the internal Time Code generator and holds the setup values data  in its internal memory which powered by the backup battery. This can be easily taken out from its socket and widely available for about 5 USD.
If the battery is bad, it is widley recommended to wait for 5 min until the large "backup"  capacitor C15 discharges (or you can shorten the "backup" capacitor be 100% sure) before installing the new battery, this will eleminate the possibiliy to have  corrupted values in the RTC RAM.

Good luck!

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: NAB Hubs for the T-Audio
« on: November 30, 2011, 02:33:08 AM »
Hi Hani:

It's a basic supply and demand situation - not to mention Doc B's stellar demo of the TP tapes at the major audio shows using his Nagra T having boosted interest level for the machine, IMHO.

The CINE adapters for the T used to sell for around $400 a pair but the last one sold for more.  The metal NAB hubs used to sell for around $800 if my memory serves me right.  The meterbridges went for around $1,500 but that was more than a year ago - a long time in the scale of tape time. ;-)

Ki
Hi Ki,

Thanks for the information,  I aquired the T-audio f?r less than the price of the NAB hubs! I have bought revox alu NAB hubs for 140 USD and they worked great for me.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / NAB Hubs for the T-Audio
« on: November 20, 2011, 09:02:21 AM »
Hi,

Was going to bid on T-Audio NAB hubs and a meter bridge on eBay  but it seems that the prices  ended up little too high (?) , 2600 USD for the hubs and 6789 USD for the meter bridge,  I am new to the Nagra T-Audio but is this the price to be paid for these accessories  ?
Is there any special with these items ?

Hello,

Just want to share my experience on repairing a problem in my newly acquired Nagra T-audio with new type keyboard.

The problem was in the shuttle mode, it never worked. After some debugging, I suspected that corrupted data was stored in the backup memory, what I did is that I took away the backup battery and shorted the backup capacitor in order to be sure that no voltage is present. I attached the battery back and the machine got a "cold" hardware restart. After that, everything is working as expected.

If you have problems regarding the control logic, try to perform a cold restart as described above.

Also, thanks for Ki for his support.

Good luck!
Kind regards,
Hani
