General Discussion / Re: Southern California Member Help

The Great White North is not Vancouver B.C Canada ... More like where I live.
One thing you have to watch for is the shipping into Canada on anything heavy
if it goes by some transport company -- you may have to have a broker clear the item into Canada , a real pain.

Sorry I don't live in Vancouver BC anymore ...
Still I am glad you had fun over there. Oddly I had the R2R on thursday
night too, a good night for music all around.
BTW ... could it be lack of advertising for R2R tapes and cheape 8 tracks
that killed the R2R format.

Prerecorded Tapes / Re: Would a modern day Barclay-Crocker succeed?

WHERE DO I SEND FOR MY FREE CATALOG OF TAPES?
ENCLOSED IS MY SELF ADDRESSED ENVELOPE...

I keep forgeting these are broadcast rather than consumer products, so of course
you have a better design with 600? ohm transformers for output and a specific input
transformer for the type of amp you have designed. I am guessing that most octal
tubes can be still found as NOS with the common ones as new production tubes.
What studio quality transformers I know of, cost a mint but they are quality products.
Lundahl transformers seem to be the best off the self transformers I know of.

I think *improve* rather than copy is the keyword here.
I would like quality parts and design for a pre-amp. A amp
anybody can put together even me. One got-ya may be output
drive of the pre-amp -- it may expect 470k input impedance.

One other place for odd parts is Surplus Sales of Nebraska

Raw Tape / Re: ampex 641 tape "professional"
« on: April 12, 2009, 02:04:32 AM »
Do the older tapes have any specific recording speed set for them?
From what little I remember of R2R in the late 70's was Radio Shack advertising
how long the blank tapes could record rather than hi-fi quality.
I do know that pre-recorded R2R tapes was a item I never knew about
until last summer off of ebay.

General Discussion / Re: The SACD vs Tape Challenge

I agree about the sound processing affects the depth of the soundstage.
Now we all need to do is  agree on what is the best amp for the music to be heard
for a modest budget. :)

Right now I am waiting for two tapes ... One  is lost in the mail somewhere
and the other is just out of Canada Customs. All I can say is I am expecting
#10 soon after this lot gets in.

I find with the few SACD's I have, I am limited to still 44Khz sampling rate for stereo.
As long as that is standard, 4 track, 3 7/8 ISP is good match. I'll trade tape hiss
instead of digital artifacts. Ben.

Footnote. I just finished a 6A5G PP amp, with cheap Hammond transformers.
I still can't decide if it is better than the SET 6B4G amp I have, but it seems
to clean up CD's better than I expected. This is using 50's technology here,
but with matched tubes and resistors and caps. I am guessing bandwidth is about
40HZ  to 18 KHZ but  I need to check that with the scope. The only part to get is
now is vintage feet and 2 track vintage music. :)  I'll continue to experiment
with my sound system for a while, since with analog you can still piece together
you think is a good system. So far it looks to be Dynaco SCA 35 clone in the future
with options added back that saved money and optimized for real triode use and
real bandwidth on the inputs.

I worry more that right now , you can't get a good quality DAC regardless of
the digital encoding even for CD quality music. Will all our music be tied to only
one supplier of chips, who only cares about profit rather than audio quality?

Tape Project Albums - general / Re: Lots of tapes shipping
« on: April 03, 2009, 05:30:53 PM »
In my case it was not saving $$$ for the tapes , it was finding a Good Reel to Reel
in Canada for sale late last summer. I hope your tape shows up soon, it is about
week for to get my package here from the day posted.
Footnote:  Arg!  I got a click and ship notice as well after I posted too!

I like the idea of a 60 minutes of music on 10.5" reel @ 7.5 IPS 2 track!

I liked the balance, but then every conductor and chief of recording
view every arrangement slightly different than me. This is music to relax with.
Turn out the lights, have music softly playing, with your eyes closed and soon
... *snore*.  This is the tape that really tests the hi-fi in your sound system.

General Discussion / Re: Crap speakers
« on: March 31, 2009, 11:43:20 AM »
I consider the $9.95 computer monitor speakers crap... even the $49.95 ones too.
I suspect one of the reasons music is so bad today, is that few people have heard
a good system with good music -- rap is not good music for testing fine detail in sound
system. the poor quailty of speakers seems to me in hindsight to be the reason.
I do know once I got away from cheap ($30) Bass Reflex speakers and went to better design ($1500) I got to hear real music, using the same full range drivers - ($300 pr)
