Tape Project Machines / Flux Magnetics Heads
« on: December 18, 2014, 09:34:44 PM »
Are Flux Magnetics heads still being made?

I have a MkIII-8. Locate the internal speed switch on the main board. I am not sure why this machine shares this switch with it B2 cousins but it does. Get the deck on it's side and spray contact cleaner (Deoxit) through the switch while working it back and forth 10 or more times. Also spray into the back corners of the front Speed switch and work it 30+ times. This treatment shook out capstan and logic issues on my MkIII-8. Also I have found the Pitch Control can cause wow and occasionally keep the capstan from spinning if dirty. Exercising it On and Off (in/out) 30-40 times has helped there. I wish mine was a 2 track.

I'll try to dig into my BII-HD to see if the board matches.

That site rocks! Thanks Dan!

On my BII models dirty switches are usually the main cause of problems. Try cleaning the Speed switches, on front and the main board as well as the Reel (Large-Small) switch, exercise the Pitch Control knob(in and out) and Monitor switches. That H - L switch on the main board controls more than just speed and can be the fix for some of the weirdest combination of maladies. Had a machine that a tech said the capstan motor was defective. Cleaned the H - L  switch and the capstan works fine. For that internal H-L switch you will need the main board swung down, then turn the machine on it's side, spray DeOxit into the side of the switch while working it.

Steve you've done it again! That was a great read. Thank you so much.

Try cleaning the internal speed (L-H on the main board) as well. I have solved many problems just by cleaning that switch.

Thanks Myles. Lots of interesting info in a short period of time. I hope there can be a Reel Talk at the New York show.  Only gripe: Too bad they didn't pass a wireless mic around to the attendees to let us hear the questions they were asking.

Will it be filmed? I would love to be able to experience this.

Same here, just a blank page.

Tape Tech / Re: Just got a A77 MKIII - mods & tweaks

I recently saw HS boards for an A77 on ebay. Not sure if the seller also was offering the capstan. From what I have read it is not so simple as just a simple parts change. Voltages are also different in the HS version.
