Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: New member - with STUDER A810
« on: April 06, 2017, 11:14:02 AM »
Hi Garrym,

If your looking to source parts and advice, I suggest you join the Yahoo Studer Group.
I think you'll find a number of 810 users there that can give you plenty of info about your particular machine.

Hi Joe,

You might find some troubleshooting help in the Reel to Reel Links sticky located above the General Forum. Lots of Otari stuff there.
In the days when that sticky was created, YouTube hadn't quite become the juggernaut it is today so I would also suggest doing a crawl through the pages of Otari 5050 related videos there.
I wouldn't be so quick to assume that leaky caps are the problem (although they very well could be). I suggest checking all the multi pin connectors on the boards (pull each one, clean the male end and reconnect).

General Discussion / RIP Dale Manquen

Even though I never met Dale, I learned much about tape and recorders from his generous postings on the tape related lists.
If you've never visited his site, do yourself a favor and check it out.
A sad day for all of Tape-dom.

As others have said, continued success!
You guys have set a very high bar and it's great to see the newer companies strive to meet the challenge.

Looking forward to seeing what comes next!

I join the rest of the posters in congratulating you guys for creating something of lasting importance!
And good on you for seeing the importance of enjoying life and doing the stuff that has to be experienced first hand to be appreciated.

Happy Holidays to the Schmalle clan and all my fellow TP fans!

Hey Guys!
Just want to say that I received the Mozart tapes the other day.
Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to listen yet but I will this weekend.

What a great holiday surprise!

Tape Tech / Re: Flat Copy?
« on: November 07, 2016, 09:26:59 PM »
Greetings guys!

IMHO what is meant by "flat copy" depends entirely on the folks who made the copy.
In other words, Flat as opposed to copies which aren't flat such as Dolby A encoded.
So Larry, we aren't the people to ask.
Only the folks who know what "isn't flat" is and they are the people who made the copy and wrote "Flat Copy" on yours.

At least, that is my WAG.

General Discussion / Re: Worried About Tape Head When Rewinding
« on: October 19, 2016, 11:32:20 AM »
The lifters are supposed to be "lifting" when the machine is in stop.
Lay your machine on it's back and see if there is space between the tape and the head when stopped. If there is, put it in rewind/fast forward and watch to see if the lifters go down. If not, the sound you're hearing is just because the tape is close enough to the repro head for a little playback.
Some machines turn the playback amp off during rewind and fast forward others don't.
As long as the lifters are working, the sound isn't a problem.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: Revox B77 conversion to 1/4 track
« on: June 20, 2016, 11:43:40 AM »
I'm with Charles on this.
I would also suggest getting an Otari 5050 series machine that has both 2 track and 1/4 track playback heads. I'm sure they're just as abundant in Oz as they are here in the US so you should be able to get a good deal on a nice one.
Sure beats the insane shipping costs you guys endure down there!

Raw Tape / Re: Capture Tape

I bought some supplies from Spliceit a while back and forgot about them.
They seemed to have stepped up their game and the Capture tape is a significant addition to the community.
Can't wait to give some of their tape a try.
