Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Studer A810 with unbalanced preamp...
« on: February 13, 2014, 04:03:31 AM »
Hi to all!

Last night I connected a Studer A810 with XLRs output to my McIntosh C28 RCAs with a dedicated cable (XLR -> RCA). I utilized the C28 rear inputs REC in. I didn't connected the REC out because I was interested in playback only.

The C28 is freshly refurbished and serviced so fully functionally and within specs. And then I realized a severe hum even without signal and even disconnecting the tape machine and just leaving the cables... The hum is important and intolerable with the preamp volume pot beyond 12 o' clock. I checked the cables and I noted that all the 3 pins of XLR are isolated between them. I conencted another cable (always XLR to RCA) but with pin 1 nad 2 of XLR connected and the hum is still present even less loud...

May be the cables are not suitable and leading to unwanted ground loops?

Should I need this?

Tape Tech / Studer A810 fast forward problems‏‏
« on: December 03, 2013, 05:41:03 AM »
Hello to all,

please I would like to have your skilled help in fixing a little problem in my STUDER A810.

When the Left Reel (big NAB metal) is tape full I start the FAST FORWARD and the Right Reel (also big NAB metal) begins to take-up the tape. After 20-40 seconds the Right Guide Roller of the Tape Tension Sensor slowly goes to the lowest zone causing the STOP of the Fast Forward.

In principle I guessed that this was due to some "sticky" old tape and in facts restarting the FF several times (actually just 2 or 3 times because this problems occurs only at the begin of taking-up operation) the tape reaches the end and the next time in FF with the same tape the problem seems fixed or almost.

The doubt is that this happens also with new modern tapes so I guess that there is some adjustment to be made... I try to understand the Manual but it is very complex for me.

I have to underline that this problem is not present with small 7" reels.

I have noticed also that the sliding of Guide Roller makes a little "click" (like a spring or thin sheet noise) in the upper path just before the end-run.

Another clue is that the bearings of the Guide Rollers are slightly noisy so it could be that the tape tension along the path is not at its best. For that I am waiting for a new set of bearings.

Thanks a lot for useful help!

Cheers,

Guglielmo

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Studer A 810 refining
« on: July 12, 2013, 09:17:02 AM »
Hello to all!

I am a recent owner of a great A 810 as well. Not yet deeply auditioned so far but I know that it has been calibrated by professional lab so at a hurried check it sounds as expected: dynamic and musical pending the tape source recording quality.

So just a little question: as far as cosmetic appearance is concerned my machine is in very good conditions, what was not near mint has been replaced (rack side rails, mains switch, front and upper panel repainted,...). Just a little spot: my 810 has a VU meter with slight scratches due to that bloodied tape cutting guide located above... So the transparent plastic is lightly scratched and the grey panel above it as well. I looked for spares but unfortunately Studer and Audio-House.ch (who is in charge of "vintage" Studer RtR spares) both have no longer available the VU plastic glass and the metallic grey panel around it.

Could someone suggest me where to find these items, even used but in better shape, to put my 810 in top conditions? OK, Ebay may be a good way but I have to hope that these paricular items will be on auction... and often they are from very used equipment!

I appreciate your support!

Cheers,

Guglielmo

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Studer 4 tracks...?
« on: January 21, 2013, 04:19:20 AM »
Hello to everybody and Happy New Year!

If I remember right there was a Studer machine with "classic" studio features like 15 ips and 2 tracks on 1/4" tape but in addition the capability in playback only to read 4 tracks tapes at 7-1/2 ips. It did exist such a model or there was a custom built recorder? Actually I am looking for an high level RtR able to play both Studio Tapes (i.e. The Tape Project reels) and commercial 4 tracks classic and pop reels (Ampex, RCA, CBS,...).

Thanks for help!

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Nagra QGB
« on: June 06, 2011, 05:41:55 AM »
Hi to all!

I own a Nagra IV-SJ and I've already asked some infos about the playback capabilities of this machine.

Actually I was looking for a large reel adapter for it (namely the QGB) and finally I found it. Now I am waiting this equipment but in the meantime I would ask if there is some RtR forumer which knows or owns this accessory in order to get some instructions about its operations.

If someone uses this type of Nagra item and has got the Owner Manual I thank in advance if may send a PDF of this.

I think that it is not difficult to use this accessory anyway the User Manual could be very helpful for me.

Thank you to all for contribution!

Prerecorded Tapes / Quadraphonic tapes
« on: April 12, 2011, 06:36:06 AM »
Hi to all.

Please an information: may the "discrete quadraphonic" open reel pre-recorded tapes be played on 2 tracks RtR? Obviously without 4phonic effect but simply in stereo?

Thanks!

Cheers,

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Nagra IV JS
« on: March 02, 2011, 01:21:59 PM »
Hi to all!

Please I need an information: I may have the occasion to get a good Nagra IV JS. My aim is not to to record but mainly to play my collection of 2 track pre-recorded tapes. Is it a good machine suitable for this scope? What is the difference between the classic IV S and this version? Is it a "well sounding" machine?

Thanks for contribution!

Prerecorded Tapes / Barclay Crocker Tapes Equalisation
« on: September 06, 2010, 03:29:36 AM »
Hi,

first of all I would say hello to everybody, I am new on this wonderful Forum!

And now just a question following some listening to my BC prerecorded tapes: are these dubbed with NAB or IEC equalisation? Actually I believed that "modern" equalisation is NAB std. due to the fact that on my Revox A77 the IEC is "suggested" (on User Manual) for "old" recordings... On the contrary I understand that top master tapes like "The Tape Project" are IEC...

Moreover listening to good BC tapes with good decoding Dolby Unit (Nakamichi NR 200) on my Revox the IEC position (rather than NAB) seems giving more dynamic and live music...

Thank you for clarification

Guglielmo
