Hooker 'n' Heat / Re: Hooker 'n' Heat First Impressions
« on: December 14, 2014, 04:30:39 PM »
It's Christmas season and I was just visited by the Ghost of John Lee and let's not forget the great great Alan Wilson. As a person who has owned this album since release along with every audiophile reissue, this one is IT.  Should have been a four tape set.

Hi Tim,
Thanks for your response.  I own(ed) a number of 2 track decks and noticed that the playback head was slanted downwards to the right.  When I played a 2 track 15ips tape recorded on my Teac X2000M (which was bought new and never touched other than for routine maintainence) the highs were dull.  I purchased this deck from a local repair shop and it was still in the box with manuals, etc.  Apparently someone had to "play" with the adjustment screws.  The heads appear to have very little signs of wear and the machine is nearly blemish free.

I'm going to contact the shop today to see if they can do a proper alignment, however my guess is that they don't MRL Calibration tapes.  I'm willing to by the necessary tape(s) if he can do the alignment.

General Discussion / Head Alignment on an Otari MX5050 B2HD
« on: November 19, 2013, 07:47:04 PM »
I recently ordered six of the Tape Project tapes and picked up a very clean Otari MX5050 B2HD.  However just looking at the heads it appears that they need an Alignment.  I'm going to order the Alignment tape however I'm clueless on how to do the Alignment, do I need a scope or can I do it by ear?  Any help would be appreciated.

General Discussion / Re: ANYONE MADE 15 ips 2 TRACK COPIES OF LPs?
« on: January 19, 2009, 02:55:27 PM »
I dub many of my 45 rpm albums (such as the Analog Productions Fantasy Jazz or Note Note Series) onto 2 track 15ips tape.  They come out exceptional with no loss of quality.   I go straight out of my phono stage to the inputs of the deck (equipment used VPI Aries 3 maxed out with SDS, Ring, Heavy Clamp, HRX feet), Lyra Skala and Modwright Phonostage all wired with Kimber KCAG's.  However based on the cost of new tape stock (appx $50 a reel), I've now been transfering them to DSD digital discs.

Suggestion Box / Re: Beatles White album

I owned many of the Beatles 7 1/2 tapes and all were in near mint condition, showing little signs of play.  The key word here is owned, simply put, they did not sound that good.  I would not spend the money for these if I was buying them for sound quality.  Great sounding Rock reels are the exception rather than the rule.

Tape Project Machines / Bottlehead Tube Head amp
« on: April 02, 2007, 07:10:26 AM »
I would like to order a Bottlehead Tube Tape amp like the one demonstrated at the CES show.  Is this available for purchase and how can I order one.  Also does it offer both IEC and NAB switching.
Thanks

I can vouch for the Teac service offered by this site.  They are comprised of former Teac/Tascom service techs.  The also have many parts on-hand.

Suggestion Box / Re: Fantasy Label Jazz Titles
« on: March 27, 2007, 06:46:55 PM »
I can't share any specifics at this point (gotta keep the competition guessing), but we are sensitive to the fact that a LOT of you tape heads are seriously into 50s-70s jazz. We're definitely planning to put out some great titles from some classic labels.

When I relayed this to a friend his reaction is the same as mine, where do we sign up.

Prerecorded Tapes / Re: Tape Life
« on: March 27, 2007, 06:30:29 AM »
I bought many tapes over the last couple of years.  IMO it's more a matter of how they were treated and stored versus the age.  Several months ago I aquired a still sealed in the baggie copy of the 2 track Jazz Party in Stereo by Ellington.  I can't imagine it sounding much better than if it was made yesterday.  I'm been fortunate to aquire many still sealed tapes and they sound great.  When buying on Ebay the only advice I can offer is look at the pictures carefully.  Although there is no sure way to tell, when I see boxes that are worn or tapes that are not properly secured it generally will indicate that what you will get is a well used tape.
Just my opinion.

Suggestion Box / Fantasy Label Jazz Titles
« on: March 27, 2007, 06:22:01 AM »
I've been watching this project unfold over the last year and a half with great anticipation.  Apparently the Fantasy Jazz catalog is fairly easy to license since it's been reissued numerous times by many of the audiophile vinyl labels.  I'm not sure how they would react as far as the R2R format goes but it may be worth a shot.
