You might want to try Skywave tape deck repair in the Chicago area. Sam has been a TEAC/Tascam technician for years and has vast knowledge and parts collection.

Or you could take the opportunity to get another deck. remember that "reel to reel" is plural.

I think that Doc was referring to the 2" tall bright orange TASCAM label

subtle nameplate

thanks!

"thousands" is a bit more than i would need... thanks for the heads up on reeltronix - i'd forgotten about them.

i have access to a CBC wajerjet, the guys said that they'd run off a few for me, but they mentioned "burrs" on the edges. not good.  maybe a local CNC is the best way to go.

General Discussion / where to get flanges
« on: June 07, 2013, 12:14:08 PM »
I've started buying pancake, and i'm going to need reels for it. Since it is already on hubs what i really need is flanges.

Instead of getting a mishmash of reels and flanges, I'd like to get all the same - i'd even consider moving all my existing self recorded tape to these flanges (pre-recorded would stay on their own flanges). This gives ma a "house look" to my big reels that really appeals to me.

I could talk to local CNC companies, but I'm wondering where does the tape project get it's flanges made?

I'm willing to put money at this project and would need 60 - 100 flanges so i might be able to take advantage of numbers (set being the biggest cost in these things).

Nothing too complex - here's a mockup - the artwork would either be silkscreen or rubdown transfer (i have a source for making screens and for making transfers).

well.... you could use the first reel for Truckin' - assuming you 7.5 ips instead of 15 ips. :)

I know that The Dead used Mac amps in concerts as they really cared about the quality of the sound. I bet that the studio masters would have had similar care taken for the sound quality.

Elvis Costello, "Radio Radio", 1978

Some of my friends sit around every evening
And they worry about the times ahead
But everybody else is overwhelmed by indifference
And the promise of an early bed
You either shut up or get cut up, they don't wanna hear about it
It's only inches on the reel-to-reel
And the radio is in the hands of such a lot of fools
Tryin' to anesthetize the way that you feel

well, i bought the machine. i've always liked the look of the crowns. seems like an interesting machine. only real complaint is that there is a bit of bounce on the tape/leader when you hit play. but that's what leader is for.

testing it out i had the B77 hooked up to it, and my 707 sitting next to the pair, all three on the dining room table and my highly patient wife looking on :)

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / crown sx-822
« on: January 14, 2013, 09:15:51 PM »
there is a crown sx-822 near me for about $500. Serviced recently by John Haines in Indiana. I haven't seen it, or the heads, but do i need an 8th deck?

my thinking is that i would turn my Tascam into an IEC machine (easy enough to do), use the 822 for NAB and put the B77 in the family room because it's the purty one :)

i've read the other thread on Crown 800s, but i'm wondering if anyone has anything else to add.

i have a couple of jensen transformers in a battery pack phantom supply that brings the neumanns up to line level.

<insert secret CLS MLOC handshake>

love that machine - always on the eye for a local one, but haven't found one in years of searching. sigh.
