My sincerest apologies, sorry for my clumsiness in asking questions.

Should have asked like this:

"What is the experience of people who have used Tandbergh TD20A SE compared to Otari MX5050 High speed version in regard to sonics, reliability, durability, and maintainability?"

The Otari is more reliable certainly more durable and maintainable. Sonically and I have the TD20a high speed there is not much in it, the tandberg is slightly quieter but I prefer the Otari. They are both lousy tape handlers, and a Tascam BR20 knocks them dead!

Hi Bob, i never did solve the problem! I have a little tech knowledge and some equipment but am possibly likely to do more harm than good!
i suspect if one follows the instruction in the work shop manual it might do the trick but i been a little lazy/busy buying and servicing some other interesting decks.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / OTARI MX 5050 B2 11 more problems!
« on: April 18, 2011, 05:26:40 PM »
I just picked a 5050 for parts buts its actually in better shape than my regular machine except there is a problem with the motor function.
No ff and no rewind, capstan motor turns and the deck will play a tape but there is no back tension on the supply reel either. I have checked and cleaned all connectors but nothing!
I suspect the motor control board but am hesitant to swap in the one from my good machine in case it damages the good one.  Am i looking on the right track here and does anyone have a spare board?

I have just experienced the exact same problem on another 1506 i have just picked up. I doubt its the pitch control knob as i would assume its out of circuit when swithed out. In any case when swithed in the speed is dead stable . I have adjusted the speed pot to get it right when switched out and its stays good for a few minutes and then starts to run slow or fast again.

It is not a mechanical issue, the machine will playback perfectly confirming playback head alignment and there is no difference other than 1 or 2 db between the three headblocks i have tried, incidently they perform perfectly on my other machines, the tape tension is good and it is travelling as it should visually and it it plays ok. I am aware the eq control is on the record side and it does not function apart from that, i dont know how to give any further detail!!!

Hi Mikkel,

It seems that the eq circuit may be the problem as moving the lever does nothing and as i understand it on this machine there different settings of eq for each speed selected and this does not seem to be happening either!

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Technics RS1520
« on: December 08, 2010, 03:19:27 PM »
I now have a 1520 to replace my 1500 because of the ability to set up for tapes without going into the machine.
My 1500 will produce a flat frequency response to 19khtz @7.5ips the 1520 will go flat to 10k then drops of sharply. Any adjustment to the bias or eq will extend the response to 16khz but with a 7db lift between 2khz to 12khz or worse, and it sounds nasty. I have tried all the headblocks i have including a new 4 track record but they all produce similar results. Is there something that i dont know or understand that is causing this problem
or must there be an electronic fault. The problem is affecting both channels.

Problem solved. I was monitoring through my headphones on the deck. The output into my pre amp does not clip at all, so the headroom problem is in the headphone department!

Hi Steve,

Button received yesterday, thank you.
The issue of clipping on the replay amp is not resolved but only occurs when in the recording mode, so when in normal playback as opposed to monitoring a recording is doesn't clip at all even past plus 6db.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Teac x2000

Have now acquired a Teac X2000 that does need a little fettling.
Is there a parts resource for Teac? I have contacted Teac UK but no response yet.
I need the left hand idler wheel, the rubber tire has disintegrated and the fixing cap thread has sheared so need that too! Not to mention the stretchy capstan belt and heads that dont look great!!! I have found a belt kit on Ebay but am struggling with the other bits.

Hi Steve,

The deck records perfectly even going over 0db as long as playback is reduced to below 0db. Its not the heads, i have 3 headstacks, 2 and 4 track including a brand new one and apart from being slightly out for level the problem is the same. It sounds like i am clipping the input to the playback amp and reducing the output level solves the problem, but i know it shouldn't be like that, it should have perhaps 10db headroom before clipping?
My electronic knowledge is basic and i have tools, voltmeter and a scope! And i know where the rec/play amp is!!

Fred:

One of the most confusing issues for playing tapes is to understand the tape recorder's normal operating level.  Tell us more about the calibration tape you had used to determine that your machine is set for 0dB.

Ki
Ki,
Its an old reference tape that i have, but no details. When used on my Otari shows 0db on the low flux position.
