Suggestion Box / Re: General Classical Music Release Suggestions
« on: September 14, 2007, 08:36:36 AM »
Hi Ed,

A good choice. The duPre recordings were never available on any of the EMI 2 track releases. While I don't have any interest in the vocal recordings which are the flip side to her Elgar and Delius recordings, it would be great to have the concertos paired up; like EMI did when they re-released them in the 70's.

It would be nice to have a complete set of all her Cello concertos on Tape Project releases.

Would it be possible to just send in a 1500's tape head stack to have the heads replaced? Or is it necessary for the head stack to be on the machine for proper set up?

Are you able to take in machines for the "Plan A" update yet?

That one extra classical title is enough for me to finally commit to a subscription; but which one....?

It's a great list. I used it to build my "want list".

Thank you for all the work you put into it!

Tape Project Albums - general / Mastering of Classical titles
« on: June 20, 2007, 09:46:13 AM »
I own the three classical recordings that are planned for release this year. All of them are superb in sound. They have wide open soundstages, a great dynamic range, and natural sound. e.g., wood sounds woody, and brass sounds brassy.

I am no engineer, and I have a limited understanding of the mastering process, though I do understand that multi track recordings can be mastered to end up with various mixes.

Can you tell me how the mastering of these three classical titles will change the sound of these recordings that I hear on playback through my turntable.

Will they sound basically the same, but better, or will there be noticable differences?

TIA, David

Suggestion Box / Re: Genre Mix/ answering Pauls ?

Personally, I was hoping for 60% classical; that way I would be able to justify a subscription. But, based on this statement, it looks like I'm going to be purchasing individual tapes.

We don't expect there will be any more Classical titles this year, beyond the three already announced.

I know a guy in Toronto, that is a superb technician.

Steve has worked on dozen's of pieces of tube and solid state electronics for me as; well bringing back to life a dead Revox A-77. He teaches electronics at Seneca College in Toronto, and is also an electronics designer. He is a great guy who does good work and charges fair rates. He also guarantees his work, which is pretty rare these days!

I hope this is of some help to anyone in the greater Toronto area.

Thank you for all the updated information.

Is it possible to say how many of the remaining four titles for this year are classical?

Prerecorded Tapes / Re: Barclay-Crocker collecting notes

I've always been partial to the Unicorn Horenstein Mahler 3rd, but some of my enthusiasm is for the sound.  It was one of the first 8-track mastered classical recordings, and the BC tape sounds way better than the discs, either imported, Nonesuch or HNH.

Granted, I have spent a lot more on each of my various turntables than any single 4 track tape machine I have ever owned, but I have not been completely won over to the sound of 4 track tapes when they have been compared to their vinyl counterparts.

But, based on this discussion, I'm getting the idea that the BC's are the way to go for later 4 track releases. I have to say that I have always been turned off by the idea of dolby B and DBX. I have always felt that adding another piece of equipment in the signal path will degrade the sound as much as any benefit that will be gained by adding it, thereby ultimately changing the sound, and not necessarily improving it.

So what is the overall sense of the BC tapes compared to duplicates by Bel Canto, RCA, Columbia, Ampex and others? Were the BC's the best duplicates for later 4 track releases? Were there any benefits to these processed tapes over the standard non-processed tape releases?

Hi David,

I'm working to get set up to start receiving machines this week. We already have quite a few folks asking about sending machines to me for work. We had a slight mishap with one machine we shipped to NY. I think it may call for a modification of the shock handling capabilites of our crates, that I need to work out before I can have crates made for Plan B machines. I'll keep everyone posted as to my progress this week, and hopefully by next week we can begin scheduling mod work for our clients.

Are there any updates as to when you will start taking machines in for tape path updating and head replacement? I am trying to decide whether to ship my machine from Canada, or buy one in the US, and have them ship it directly to you.

Also, where would the machine need to be shipped to? Knowing this may be helpful deciding what to do based on the shipping costs.

TIA, David

Tape Project Machines / New 4 track tape heads?
« on: May 25, 2007, 05:33:27 PM »
Does Flux Magnetics produce a 1/4" 4 track head which could be installed at the same time as their 2 track head?

If yes, could it optimized for 7.5 ips playback speed, while keeping their 2 track head optimized for 15 ips?

I have not used his services at this time, but I have spoken to Roger several times and he has told me that he is the authorized Studer tape machine technician for Canada. I hope this is a bit of help for anyone with Studer tape machines in Canada.

No need to answer. I found the information on another page of this forum.

Just in case anyone else misses it: http://www.tapeproject.com/smf/index.php/topic,31.0.html

My apologies, I had looked, but I missed it somehow.
