Suggestion Box / Surfin' with the Astronauts

Don't laugh, it's one of the best recorded albums you will ever hear. Get the original RCA Dynagroove LP or the Japanese BMG CD (the sound on Bear Family and box set issues are not as good) and you will see what I mean. I have been killing people with this for 45 years. A really tight and professional touring rock and frat group is signed by RCA to compete with the surf sounds of the day by the Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, etc. They learn to play surf music in a week or so and head for RCA Studio A in LA, where Al Schmidt and Dave Hassenger are waiting for them. The cavernous echo of the monster studio plus all (now) vintage Fender gear including tube outboard reverb units and JBL/Showman amps create an amazing sound - get the record. Also, the musicianship is first rate (check out Misirlou if you really want to hear a great version of this song). One of my life's goals is to hear the master tape of this session...

What a TP selection this would be - totally different genre.

General Discussion / A Couple of Questions

Hi RR:

I have two SONY APR 5003's and two Otari MTR-12's that I obtained on Craig's and eBay for an average price of $400 each. They all came from working studios and functioned good enough, but Charlie King helped me tweak the azimuth on one and New Jersey Factory Service (great outfit) helped out on the rest. These machines are readily available as more studios go to ProTools and essentially give away their old and expensive and complicated analog decks.

They sound great, both handle tape very well, and are pro workhorses - not as fussy as prosumer decks if properly set up. However, a non-working APR especially is a dangerous assignment. There is a very fine APR newsgroup that includes many of the service techs who used to service these (and the old MCI) machines. They are always full of good advice, and some still do service work.

Be patient and do not overpay - you will find what you seek.

Prerecorded Tapes / Re: "beautiful music"

Certainly the QUIET VILLAGE first album by Martin Denny - a sonic spectacular if you have ever heard it on a good system. Or any of the old Command ping-pong stereo "Percussion" albums - what a hoot one of them would be.

C'mon Doc.

General Discussion / Tape Project review in Positive Feedback

Thanks Myles for your reply. We both evidently have our own opinions. Time has moved on, and most of the newer high-end studios (admittedly recording rock/pop/jazz) will have an install of some sort of TAD/Auspberger custom system, but the JBL DNA is still there. All I ask is that you take it easy on one of the truly innovatve and iconic brands in sound reproduction.

Tell JBL-basher Myles that probably half the albums he owns were mastered on JBL monitors.
