Suggestion Box / Classical Music Subscription Series
« on: January 29, 2009, 04:25:51 PM »
While I understand that there is a lot of interest in Jazz and Blues, and other styles of music, I personally don't have any interest in these styles.  And since these styles take up 60% of a subscription, they have kept me from even being a selective subscriber.

I am wondering if there would be a possibility for The Tape Project to consider a Classical Music Series.  I would subscribe today to a series with six classical titles, and if there were more, I would go for a full subscription.

I would be interested in finding out if there are others who would also subscribe to this type of a series.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Ampex 440
« on: December 16, 2008, 06:59:49 AM »
I have been offered a 2 track 1/4" Ampex 440 on its dolly for free.  I do not know what version it it.

Could those who know, tell me if it is worth spending the money getting this machine mechanically perfect.  It has one broken tape tesion guide, but other than that it plays and sounds very good.  I would not use the electronics in the long term, I dream of having a Repro head amp one day.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Could those of you that have received this tape please post your impressions of it.

I'm sorry if this has been done before, but as you can see, all the previous posts have disappeared.

Suggestion Box / Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique

Here is another title that I would like to recommend for release.

And since the Tape Project guys have an "in" with the Reference Recordings guys, maybe a T.P. issue of R.R.'s release would be something that both would consider.

Suggestion Box / Carmina Burana

This is a work that I would love to hear on a Tape Project issue.

Here are three great performances, but I would be hard pressed to recommend one over another since they all have something to recommend them.  Sorry, I don't have the catalogue numbers handy.

Stokowski - Capital
Muti - EMI
Previn - EMI

I would be interested in other recordings that people could recommend.

Tape Project Albums - general / Mastering of Classical titles
« on: June 20, 2007, 09:46:13 AM »
I own the three classical recordings that are planned for release this year. All of them are superb in sound. They have wide open soundstages, a great dynamic range, and natural sound. e.g., wood sounds woody, and brass sounds brassy.

I am no engineer, and I have a limited understanding of the mastering process, though I do understand that multi track recordings can be mastered to end up with various mixes.

Can you tell me how the mastering of these three classical titles will change the sound of these recordings that I hear on playback through my turntable.

Will they sound basically the same, but better, or will there be noticable differences?

Tape Project Machines / New 4 track tape heads?
« on: May 25, 2007, 05:33:27 PM »
Does Flux Magnetics produce a 1/4" 4 track head which could be installed at the same time as their 2 track head?

If yes, could it optimized for 7.5 ips playback speed, while keeping their 2 track head optimized for 15 ips?

Service Resources / Canadian Studer Service Tech

I have not used his services at this time, but I have spoken to Roger several times and he has told me that he is the authorized Studer tape machine technician for Canada. I hope this is a bit of help for anyone with Studer tape machines in Canada.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Machines with tape head outputs
« on: May 13, 2007, 06:44:41 AM »
I really don't want to take my Revox apart to bypass the electronics to wire directly from the heads, so I was wondering if anyone knows which modern high speed consumer 2 track machines were made with outputs directly from the heads. Ones that would probably had jumpers from the heads to the pre-amp section.

I am interested in finding out about any makes and models. Preferably made in the 70's or even possibly the 80's.

Suggestion Box / General Classical Music Release Suggestions
« on: May 12, 2007, 11:00:35 AM »
Here are a few, very personal suggestions as to Classical music releases.

  • If possible, continue to stick with the Decca family of catalogues. Though these have been available in various 4 track releases, they have never been available in 2 track format. With their huge selection of over 1,000 titles; including the superb Argo ZRG-575, (already being mentioned in another post), they have many titles that would prove to be very popular and desirable releases in 2 track format, and may very well help win over some new customers to your project.

  • Go for well recorded and highly regarded performances of accessible orchestral and concerto music recordings; similar to the ones you have already selected. Though I have thousands of chamber, solo piano, choral, operatic and mono recordings; I would not recommend releasing any of these at this time. I don't see these releases as ones that would help you build a larger customer base. But, by sticking to the orchestral repertoire, I think you would have a greater opportunity to build interest in your product and expand your market.

  • Stay away from mixing down three channel catalogues like RCA and Mercury. (Unless of course you plan on releasing them on 1/2" 3 track tape along with rebuilt 3 track machines.) These two labels have been done to death with multiple vinyl, CD and SACD releases, as well as the fact that they released many of their titles on 1/2 track tapes and are always available in the used market.

  • Choose titles that are the best examples of analogue recordings in sound reproduction with dynamics, impact and with a large and natural open sound stage.

I hope that even one of these suggestions is a bit helpful from a consumer's, as well as a reseller's perspective.

I am telling everyone that I know about this project, and I am very excited to see this grow!

This is great; keep it up!
