Can you believe it? Tape Project is ten years old! Thanks to everyone who has supported us in introducing studio quality tape reproduction to the audiophile community!

Tape Tech / Re: A810 faults

the 0188 display on your deck is the firmware version of the deck, normal for it to appear. Its only a problem when it doesn't go away or never shows up in the first place.

for specific information about the frimware version, check technical information on the A810 folder in the Studer website. (ftp.studer.ch/Public/Products/Recording_Analog/A810)

General Discussion / Re: NAB Aluminum Hub Adapters
« on: July 16, 2012, 01:01:42 AM »
I have never had a set with the metal flanges, it is my belief that they are indeed just flanges, the center piece is the same plastic workings. I have seen a site in Europe that seems to be the source of the non-revox adapters, Darklab.  Its in German
http://www.darklab-magnetics.de/darklab_webshop/index.htm
go to the NAB adapters, 29 Euros

quite willing to be told differently if they are metal in the workings

Tape Tech / Re: Possible replacement for 5532 opamp?

here is the link to the national semiconductor data pages, on there they have world wide stocking data, ie who's got what.  (under the order tab)

<http://www.national.com/pf/LM/LME49720.html#Overview>  this is the dual, comes in single and quad too, also a higher voltage version, LME4860 I think is the number.

Digikey has 1500 some odd and Arrow has 389, Arrow usually has better prices if you buy enough.

You can even get it in a TO99 can if you're willing to pay.

There is also a new TI/BurrBrown chip that is very good, but I don't know the number. 16something I think.

That's way to much $ for a smd adapter. Look at the Brown Dog stuff, many varieties and attractive prices. Have used them for quite a few cases. http://cimarrontechnology.com/

The 5532 may be old but is still amazingly good, and very robust. The 5534 is better, but it is not unity gain stable.

For my money today, the LME series from National is a significant step forward in fidelity. There are things that have to be paid attention to in implementation, like it doesn't like very capacitive loads so may not be as useful in some applications. But it sounds great and is *very* quiet. It also has very low offset, allowing you to often change to the best cap ever, none. And they are unity gain stable.

General Discussion / Re: Studer A800: Synching an MKI and MKIII?
« on: September 30, 2010, 11:35:30 AM »
the manuals for all the studers is available for from studer at their ftp site. Most of the differences between MkI and III are in the audio. transformer vs transformerless, etc....

all the 800s sync up well, see the manual.

General Discussion / Re: Will Fred revive the Studer list?
« on: September 30, 2010, 11:28:53 AM »
yes, the reconstituted list is up. It will be geared toward the master recorders only. All will be welcome to join, but discussion will be directed toward professional usage.

To join the new list, go to
<http://bach.pgm.com/mailman/listinfo/studer>
read the description and follow the directions.

be warned that Fred still feels that the Tape Project is a fools errand, others of us are more agnostic about the idea.

It is I. My "day" job is keeping Portland Safe for Recording. My night job is scratching away on the fiddle.

you use a bessel null calibration. if you were a rf engineer you would know how, its not really fun.

or you could pm me and I'll send you a file of a bessel null calibration file to use as a standard.

Be aware that Studer used specific types of lubricants in their bearings, getting a bearing of good quality does not mean that you are getting the correct lubricant. I would advise sticking with Athan, ATR or any other tape parts supplier that is knowledgeable for bearings. George and Mike both stock these parts and are readily available.

As to the A80 vs the A820, well I like the microprocessor control of the A820 vs the mechanical control of the A80/A800. The mechanics will wear and get dirty over time. The only time I have had a problem with an 820 in like areas was when the power supply took a dump and rewrote some of the firmware. Not a common occurrence. Dash pots, bah!

Also you should be aware that very early A820 2track recorders had a different tension sensor, not the roller that most of them had. It was a fixed hard plastic surface that Studer stopped using after a short time and issued a retrofit for. All subsequent machines were issued with the roller tension sensors.
