for optimum results, playback and record electronics have to be setup and adjusted for any change in heads... simply dropping in a replacement head is only half the battle...

Arian, I just bought a 7 track Miele dishwasher... I'd like to be able to play pre-recorded Derrick tapes on that... any chance you can work your magic?

.......

hehehehe... :)

I have heard Arian's Studer's and ReVox's and have to say I am most impressed... the rest of his self-designed and built system is truly first rate as well... Arian knows his stuff!!!

now all I need is a clean 810 to add to my collection........ ha!

cheers,

Danny

Are Tim's electronics tube or solid state?

David

Howdy - they are solid state...

of course there's another option not mentioned yet - it all depends on outside influencing factors, so it could still take time to develop...

my Technics is courtesy of Tim d.P. - he replaced the entire playback & record electronics with his solid state design and as a result the deck has the following specs:

NAB + IEC/CCIR + Tim EQ
5-40k (+1/-4db) [5-36k +1/-3db] @ 15ips, 80db S/N relative to full output / Tim EQ...
5-20k (+1/-2db) @ 3-3/4ips

all this w/ stock heads no less...

1/4 track & 1/2 track play as usual...

best of all, you now truly hear what some of the better pre-recorded tapes are capable of sounding, never mind Quinton or TP...

and not to mention recording... that's a whole different ball game...

cheers,

Danny

I think on that model you would actually have to change the capstan... check with a ReVox service center for availability...

to play either the TP or Quinton tapes you need a 2-track, 15ips IEC/CCIR EQ capable machine... of the consumer decks, the Technics 1500 series was the most capable because it has most the prerequisites; the 1520 also ads a switchable IEC/CCIR EQ.  I don't know of any consumer deck (except the 1520) that could right out of the box play any TP or Quinton tapes... (one benefit to the Quinton tapes is that fact that you can specify the EQ curve at time of order...)

cheers,

Danny

doubling of speed generally increases S/N ratio by about 3db, as does going from 1/4 track to 2 track... coupled with modern day quiet tape, a good EQ curve, you generate recordings that have hardly any audible hissssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss...

cheers,

D.

ROFL!!!

you crack me up dude!!!

:)

Now Arizona.....
Well that's kinda East.
Not as East say as Mexico City, but not as far South either.

Here I sit
Lips flappin in the wind
Ears wavin too!
AZ_ Gary got 004
While I'm still waitin for 001, and 002
To say nothin bout 003
oooweee!
Lonesome me.

( a recently discovered lyric from Hank Sr. rolled up in a wax cylinder and found by our own Ironbutt at the Stanford preservation extravaganza held this past weekend).  When asked about his good fortune IB stated  "The rhymin is weak, but the sentiment is priceless."  "How'd old Hank guess about the TP"?  "He must be one of those Nostradomus types or what"?

For a free down load of Hank's other lost treasures entitled "When Will I be Relapped"? stay tuned.

Meanwhile the intrepid Danny down in LA was allegedly discovered dubbing Quinton tapes on a vintage handheld Nagra 1/2" reel to reel tape toy whilst standing behind the curtain at the rear of the podium.
When discovered when someone mistook the curtain as the entry to a polling booth for the CA Primary held several weeks ago, Danny replied Quinton I don't no nuttin bout no Quinton.  Now Poindexter him I know, but no Quinton.  What party is he runnin for?  You don't mean Clinton do you?

We may not do anything in the East, but it has to beat this!
Jealous yeah, so what ya want to make of it?
Heh I have been up at least three hours earlier than you West Coast guys.
I'm tried and cranky.

Prerecorded Tapes / Re: When is a Barclay Crocker not a Barclay Crocker?

I just bought a DG BC tape...

contrary to popular opinion, the few DG tapes I do have are actually quite good sounding, certainly superior to your typical DG release...

Cheers,

D.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: which machine to get
« on: February 10, 2008, 08:20:05 PM »
The Telefunken M15a is a very nice machine, but I don't think John's $600 budget is nearly enough to pick one up in any acceptable state.

w00ps. heh, didn't see that one...

seriously the only machine worth looking at from a TP / Quinton - AAA perspective is the RS-1500... no doubt!

One machine I feel is terribly overlooked in the US market is the Telefunken M15a - I own one and it is absolutely fantastic!

if the forums admins could ever figure out how to post pictures, I'd love to share some...
