Title: WHAT IS EQUIVALENT TO MAXELL UD 35-180 TAPE?
Post by: mep on August 12, 2009, 02:43:02 PM
Is anyone making a tape that would be considered equivalent to the Maxell UD 35-180?  My bro was lucky enough to buy 2 sealed cases of the Maxell tape and I have now recorded all 20 reels for him.  That tape is joy to work with and record with.  It sounds fantastic.

When Maxell was discontinued, Hitachi recommended Ampex 406/7 as the replacement for UD-35. I believe that RMGI suggests their 911 for a sub. for 407/456.

I have tried the 911 and I don't like it.  It is a far cry from the Maxell tape.  There must be something else.

911 is supposedly a close magnetic equivalent. I used to use UD most of the time and liked it. Sound wise, I'd be interested too.
Have you tried the ATR tape?
Since we're talking about new tape here, you really don't have that many to try. If you've tried 911 and 468, all you really have left is 900 and the ATR right?

I haven't tried the SM468 yet so I guess I will give that a whirl.  I don't see the 10 1/2" metal reels though on their website.  Only plastic.
