hi all
I am being offered a free reel to reel that has "a transport fault (probably just a logic or micro switch issue)"
WHat exactly is transport? is it an easy fix? The R2R is a Revox PR99
thanks

The transport is the mechanical end of a tape deck that handles the movement of the tape itself. To this you must add electronics to record and playback. On consumer machines, the transport and electronics are commonly in one chassis. Studio machines typically have the transport as one entity and the electronics in separate housings.

What that probably means is that the tape transport does not work - that is - move tape as in play fast forward or rewind.
Some or all of these functions do not work or work properly.
On some Revox models, a small lamp would burn out in the sensor that let the machine know if a tape was threaded. If this was out the machine would not think there was tape threaded and it would not respond to the transport controls. On other machines there are typically switches on the tape tension arms that keep the machine from operating if a tape is not threaded properly. These "micro switches" control "logic" that controls the tape transport.

Good call Steve. There's a guy on eBay that has all kinds of Revox/Studer pinch rollers and parts (he's in Germany). The last time I browsed his store, he had replacement lamps for the optical sensor. Nice thing about this possible fix is, all you have to do is look and see if the lamps out (it should always be on once the machines powered up).

is this what we are talking about?

That is the fellow that has the Revox parts but if you need one or which one you might need is what you'd need to find out. There are hundreds of parts that are part of the tape transport and one or many of these may or may not need replacement. If the quoted section of your original posting is what the fellow who has the machine said, it's just like someone saying that a car has engine trouble but it could be a spark plug. You won't know until you have someone that knows these machines looks at it.
