I have heard them referred to as the best units available. I wondered how they earned this accolade and if they would benefit from the TP electronic upgrades just like all of the other big units out there?
Are these units to be found or are they rare (so rare that they aren't practical for most), are parts and/or techs available in So. California? What would the price range be if you know and where might one find one. I have checked the usual sources (ebay, craigslist) and not seen anything. Thanks so much for your time.

I am referring to the TR55 in my last post. If you would like to bring the Freida into the discussion also please do.

I've wanted one of these since I first became aware of them last year. I doubt if there is even one or two in the US. Any group members spot one or have used one? Harold and I both use the Frida decks on a daily basis. I suspect the TR-55 would be better for studio use, as the Fridas were really meant for field recording and are somewhat finicky and lightweight.

They are beautiful looking machines aren't. Does anyone have any experience using these machines or any links to them or ever seen one? It would be great to find out more about them.

I have yet to use a TR55 or the various alternates of that machine. I have heard they are spectacular and if the Frida is an indication of Lyrec's abilities there is every reason to believe the TR55 could be a super machine. I have come across them listed in Europe and I expect the cost to ship would also be pretty spectacular. I did see one on Craigs list here in Vancouver but by the time I responded it was gone.
As Rich says, I have settled on using the Fridas because they are so light and convenient.
I do have soem sales literature for the 55 and the 532.

I recall that Mitch Easter used to have two of them. I emailed him last night to see if they were still around. One got fixed up a few years ago and then he traded it for an SVT for his studio. The spare machine disappeared in the "Otho Vortex" and resurfaced when Matt Allen found our stuff while on a job for Randy Blevins. I got my Auditronics console back, and Mitch got back his MCI console, the M-23 I traded to him and the spare Lyrec. He still has the spare Lyrec but it is no longer complete and all the recorders are kinda worse for having been stored in an unconditioned space for many years. He said his impression was that the machine was top notch, but that the servo system on his older machines wasn't quite perfected (hence the need for repairs) and that later models were better in that regard.
