Title: Preamp needed for Technics RS 1500?
Post by: jgbeam on April 30, 2007, 03:10:54 PM
New guy here, intrigued by the Tape Project.  I presently have a Revox A77, which I output directly to an integrated tube amp.  Does the Technics RS 1500 require a head preamp?  Just trying to put all the pieces together so I know what I might be getting into.

Thanks.

Require? Absolutely not. Recommended? Highly. The transport on the 1500 is rock solid and neigh indestructible. The electronics ain't exactly the last word in transparency tho'.

If you want to play the Tape Project tapes the RS1500 does need a preamp different than the original one. The internal is set for NAB equalization which is OK for playing old prerecorded tapes or your own recordings. The Tape Project, however, uses IEC eq an thus you need a separate preamp with such capability.

Also note that the RS1500 needs to be modified to get the signal directly from the heads to an external amp.
