howdy, just picked up an Otari MTR-10, wow, what a nice machine! I am going to need to do some work on it, and was wondering where I may be able to get parts, if anyone has any ideas other than ebay. Also, I was FF a 10 incher and noticed that the lay of the tape was just like a library wind, tight and flat, totally unlike my other "prosumer" machines (5050 and 1500). Can anyone tell me if if is OK to store tapes in the FF/REW mode on this machine, if you have used one, you know what I mean about the tight lay at those speeds... thanks!

You can try CS Electronics. They seem to be the successor to Otari factory service in the US.

You can sometimes get a remarkably even pack, depending on the roll of tape, the reels, and the precision of the machine. However, that's still not a substitute for a proper library wind, because high speed winding usually leaves the tape under high tension, or (even worse) uneven tension. So if you value the tape, play it off or library wind it before it goes back on the shelf.

Thanks, Paul, much appreciated! Wasn't sure about the pack, it seems really nice compared to a regular machine, but I will do the library wind for all the valuable tapes...
