Some great threads have cropped up on the Ampex list lately.
Here's a link to the Pavek Museum of Broadcasting. The highlight for us is the Jack Mullen collection which includes "The" Magnetophon that started it all!

Also, Rangertone tape machines came up as a subject. I'd heard of them but had no idea that they were neck and neck with Ampex in trying to get a professional machine to market. The Ampex 200 won that race.
There's a wiki on Richard H. Ranger who developed the Rangertones along with the NBC chimes machine.
