Title: Nagra IV-S?
Post by: chrise on November 29, 2007, 04:08:49 PM
Hi,

I stumbled on this site while browsing through Agon a week ago.  Either way, I've always been interested in picking up the Nagra IV-S for home recording use and now (potentially) playback for new reissue recordings.

I'm just curious if there's an adapter one can use to accomodate for 10.5" reels?  Reason why I'm asking, is that these machines have a great reputation for their build quality.

Thanks

There is an adapter called the QGB. It's kind of a Rube Goldberg contraption that runs on rubber belts. The prices are quite high, often higher than the IV-S itself.

The IV-S is a great location recorder. It's OK/so-so for serious playback or editing, because the rewind is SLOOOOOW. I'd get one for recording for sure, in fact I have a mono 4.2 to play with. But after my experience using one to demo at shows, I would spend the price of a QGB adapter on a nice AC powered deck for home use.

Sorry Doc,

But I think you have some misinformation here regarding the QGB.  As far as I know it uses stepper motors not rubber bands (the Stellavox ABR large reel adaptor does use rubber bands).  Never used one so I can't comment about rewind speed - Ironbutt can you??

My experience with the IV-S ,at least in playback, was not positive - see:
