Just a heads up for SF bay area members. Oct 2-5th AES ( Audio Engineering Society) is holding the 125th Convention at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. As usual, there'll be more than one person could possibly participate (probably more than a medium sized group could actually). The tickets for the whole shebang are pretty steep but much cheaper if you join AES.
Most of the "Big" names in mastering are going to be involved in workshops and lectures including some fellows named Paul Stubblebine and Michael Romanowski. They'll be part of a panel discussion called " Revolt of the Mastering Engineers". http://www.aes.org/events/125/workshops/session.cfm?code=W12 Now, what the heck could that be about?
Theres also going to be tours to the Mission St studio so I'm sure the guys have got the feather dusters and squeegees out.
BTW Happy Birthday Paul! And thanks again for all the hard work and insight it takes to pull something like the Tape Project together.

Yes, there will be a tour of 1340 Mission on Friday, Oct 3, 10-12:30. Paul will be giving a tour of the facility and I have been volunteered to do a presentation on the Tape Project.

I was just reading a earlier post ... That would make it about a good year
shipping tapes ... and 3 more releases are to come yet.
Just out of curiosity, can you give a ball park figure of the number of people
who have ordered tapes, compared to the original estimate of runs?

Did anyone beside the Tape Project main guys attend "Revolt of the Mastering Engineers". How did it go? How was the studio tour.
I really wanted to go to that but I had only a pass to the floor exhibits and the events I helped video tape for the AES historical committee.
I was too cheap to buy a full pass to all events and had to mix a reggae band @ my church in Santa Cruz Sunday early evening anyway. So I was only there Friday all day.
I saw the Tape Project and MRL Labs sub-displays in the RMG tape booth but other than Jay McKnight (whom I know a bit through the historical committee) there was nobody there other than the RMG guys that were just selling their tape.

Hi Steve, I was there on Saturday only. I spent the morning at 1340 Mission ( Metric Halo was doing demos there that were fantastic, more like a workshop actually) and then spent the rest of the day window shopping the exhibit floor (I only had an exhibit pass too). Mike Spitz from ATR Services/Magnetics was there and may have been one of the busiest guys on the floor. He had a beautiful 102 on display but the four times I went by his booth, he was talking to, what seemed like, paying customers. There never seems to be a shortage of attractive ladies to steer you from this booth to that. I have to confess to listening to a couple of sales pitches for gear that I have absolutely no use for.
I spent the majority of time checking out recording gear (small digital field recorders which I'm in the market for and microphones which I just want all of) . Sound Devices had their 8 channel field recorder and Korg had their studio 1 bit (SACD) rack system which can be sync'ed with as many pairs of channels as you can stand. I drooled all over the Mojave and Micro Gefell microphone displays and was hoping that DPA would have a demo of a microphone that I'm actually interesting in buying but I guess it's not released yet.
There was that black semi truck trailer with Studer in big white letters across it but it was a demo of their automated consoles which were extremely cool to look at but I'm sure they must be insanely expensive. After looking at those, I wondered if the Metropolitan Opera is getting one of those (they were selling their old console a few months back).
When I went back to the studio, I had a great talk with Paul about the music industry in general. He has his lathe set up and running and is back to cutting records. I was really happy to hear that.
I had a hell of a good time and if it weren't for football and domestic chores, I would've driven back up on Sunday too.

This was one very interesting AES show, and probably the best I've every gone to since DBX introduced the K9 card and Rupert came out with moving faders. I wanted to get down to 1340 Mission but didn't have time to pull away between the meetings and going to Alcatraz with Tom the RMGI guy from Holland. I did hear though that people were VERY impressed with the facility. Congrats!
For ya'll who couldn't make it, there's a slew of photos on flickr.com. Do a search under "San Francisco 10-3-2008" without the quotation marks. Somewhere in the pack are the AES show photos plus lots of tourist type stuff around and in the Mascone center, the Marriott on 4th St, and Alcatraz.
The shaven head guy is the RMGI international sales manager from Holland. There's even a photo showing the Tape Project display in the RMGI booth with a mint Technics deck and Sennheiser headphones.
By the way, the young blonde with the long flowing hair in the ATR photos (not Bette..Mike Spitz's wife) is Amey. She's got the cutest.... accent, and was a real magnet getting people into the booth. It doesn't hurt a bit! By the way, ATR Magnetics won the 2008 TEC award for their recording tape. I think this was the "recording devices" category and I *think* it was the very first time a tape manufacturer won for their tape. AMPEX won back in the day but that was for their ATR decks, I think, and not the tape.
