Here's a interesting article that was linked over on the Ampex list a few days ago that take a bit of thinking. It was offered in answer to questions regarding crowned capstan pulleys used in some of the older Ampex machines. If you understand this on your first reading, you're a better man than I!

At first I thought the 2nd drawing of 2 misaligned pulleys was something showing offset in a tonearm!
I know it's true having made belt drive surfaces that the crown works. In flat capstan flywheel belts, if the capstan is not crowned typically the motor pulley is or has flanges.
