Title: Otari MX5050 MkIII 2 service manual
Post by: johnsonad on May 01, 2009, 06:18:57 PM
Hello,

I just sent an email off to Otari but was wondering if someone had an electronic copy of the service manual for a MX5050 MkIII 2 that they would be willing to share?  I wasn't able to locate one on the usual sites but may be looking in the wrong place.  Thank you in advance!

Aaron

Here's a site to download the operations manual. If you do a search on this site this link is in a number places along with a source for the schematics.
http://www.analogrules.com/
I've never seen a full service manual like other machines have.

Thanks but it is not on this site.  My MkIII 2 is a 1/4" machine with 1/2 and 1/4 track playback heads.

The MkIII seems to be just a consol version of another player?  Is this correct and if so, I have an instruction manual for a BII.  I have a buddy who is going to test and allign the machine.  Is there any other manual he would need?

I think there's only one manual. The only things it lacks is a parts list and the schematics. If it's an operations manual you have, that should be all he needs to do any adjustments. For the individual models, there may have been service updates but I've never seen one.

Thanks Steve,

I have the operating manual for it.  Funny, I beleive there is an error in the manual as far as the calibration tapes are listed when compared to the MRL website.  The manual has for 7 1/2 ips MRL 21J205 and the MRL site has MRL 21T204 listed.  In short the Otari manual has the 7 1/2 ips tape listed for the 3 3/4 ips and the 15 ips tape listed for the 7 1/2 ips.  Is this correct??

I'll tag another question on and hopefully someone is reading this thread.

The MKIII has a 5 pin cable running from the main unit to the reproducer head.  I'm thinking of making a cable to from the main unit to my McIntosh C22.  Can someone tell me the pin configuration?  Thanks!

I just emailed you the schematic and parts list. Let me know if you have any trouble opening them.
The schematic is kinda an eyeburner but maybe you can increase the contrast at your end. I don't have an Otari so I've never tried.
Hope that helps.

Thanks Steve.  Received and they open just fine.  I'll let you know what I come up with.

Great John,
Anyone that comes up with the nuts and bolts for stuff like this, please try and document it and post it in an appropriately titled thread. This way it'll be easy to find with a simple search and won't get buried. No reason for folks to have to reinvent the wheel over and over.

This sort of lends itself to what I believe was one of Doc's ideas for this forum. To have current info pertaining to use of reel to reels. There's stuff all over the web on reel to reel but no central location. I don't know how many times I've gone back to find an old post that I've made here just to find the address of a link I've offered.
For anyone who hasn't already seen it, there are a couple of stickies above the General forum. One is a beginners guide (which is meant to pick up where your owners manuals leave off) and a Reel to Reel links thread. And although I'd like to keep the beginners guide as clean as possible to lend a more textbook feel to it, I feel like the links thread really should be seeing more posts added to it on a regular basis. Of course, I'm probably the number one offender in forgetting to post great links but "do as I say,..".
