Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Studer 810 vs. Revox PR99 MKIII
« on: December 10, 2012, 08:24:06 AM »
hello everyone!

I'm in a doubt, to buy a Studer 810 for 3000 Euros, or Revox PR99 for 1000 Euros.
Both are as described from the seller in Near Mint condition and serviced.
Studer has butterfly heads (used 1-2mm), and Revox (2mm).
I heard that Studer 810 colours the music a bit - but that he is also more present in the HI range, wider and louder?
Is the price difference of 2000 Euros really worth ?

thank you !!

Tape Tech / 7 ? VS. 15

hello everyone,

once again, might be an easy question for you, and very important for me.

I recently did a comparation recording same music on 7 ? speed and 15 speed using Revox PR99 and Maxell tape.

I used a CD so I had the sound of the source unchanged.

The results were pretty shocking to me regarding my poor knowlegde of tapes, that a recording on 15 speed should be better?

The recording on slower speed 7 ? - came out when transfered back to my DAW apr. 2db louder, with much more low frequencies, while the recording on 15 speed  was nicely superior only in hi frequencies, and definetely poor in bass.

Is that normal, or is something wrong with my Revox?

There's no deformation in sound, neither hiss, and all of these differencies are just slightly noticable, but revealing that the recording on slower speed is louder and much more closer to the original source is not what I heard.

thank you for your comments!

Hello everyone,

I'm totally new in the reel to reel world, and have one, hopefully easy question to answer for you.

Recently I bought my first PR99 MK3 for the purpose of live recording ONLY. The results are fantastic compared to digital.

Now it's been offered to me to exchange the PR99 for an C270 + 200 $.

They are both in NM condition, is it worth it? I'm mostly recording acoustic guitar, voices, and on the other side analogue synthesizers and various sound generators.
Low noise floor, frequency range, reliability is what I need.

Also, the head on the C270 is 1mm in better shape.

thank you!
I need to make the decision pretty fast.
