Reel to Reel Tape Machines / why do some reel to reels have the horn looking things over the NAB?

I am new to this so please excuse my ignorance but I see some reel to reels with NAB adapters the silver, or on ebay red, blue circular alu adapters.

Are they essential, what do they actually do if you already have a NAB?

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / what exactly is transport

hi all

I am being offered a free reel to reel that has "a transport fault (probably just a logic or micro switch issue)"

WHat exactly is transport? is it an easy fix? The R2R is a Revox PR99

Raw Tape / how many times can you record on the same tape?

just wondering, to save costs I am going to copy my recordings to tape to give them that tape sound, but as we all know 1/4" tape is expensive, so how many times can i record on the same tape before i will hear loss of quality? or can i buy a new tape record once on it and demagnetize it and start again?

Raw Tape / Revox PR99 what tape?

Hi all

I am totally new here so please go easy on me.
I am buying my first reel to reel a Revox PR99 Mk2 or 3.  I want to buy the right tape for it.
I am looking to record my analog synthesizers onto tape. What do you kind people recommend?

There is something beautiful about rewinding or fast fowarding a reel to reel and then there is the sound :-)
