Otari MX-50

Is there anyone familiar with this tape recorder? Is it micro-processor controlled that enable it to slow down from fast wind/rewind as the tape nears ending? Does it feature a tape dump as well as the ability to do slow rewinds in order to get good tape packing.

Which of these decks would be preferable regarding what I am looking for presently:

1. Otari MX-50
2. Revox A-700
3. Revox PR-99 Mkll

Or, maybe I ought to just wait untill I can find a Studer A-807 to bring home later. I'm sure it will do what I am asking for above and much more. Thanks all.

Man, you guys have tape deck buyin' fever! It can take a while to really get one machine dialed in. You really learn a lot about what you need (as apposed to what you want) by getting one working above factory spec's. I'd concentrate on one at a time. I don't know the Otari, but the 2 Revox decks won't be much different than your 1506.

I have to fill in my spare time until my listening room is redone and my TP tapes start to arrive.
In the meantime the rtr's make conversation pieces as door stops, end tables and stands for funeral urns.
At 3 3/4 ips in the horizontal position, they also double as twin lazy susans; got to be quick.
Heh Steve the high def tape transfer folks said they had software at your CANS weekend.

Maybe. I listened to sooo much stuff that I was unfamiliar with on silver disk and hard drives. I think most of their releases are 24/96 DVD-A and classical. I tried to listen to some symphonic works on one of the electrostatic rigs, but a "member of the trade" was so intent on impressing us with his criticisms of each piece of gear, that he kept disconnecting stuff(not even his gear!) and starting and stopping the music. I did my best to ignore him and moved on to greener pastures. Did they say what was on the release?
