I posted this on TP machines but thought it might be more appropriate to post her.

Hi Guys, my first post here but have been a bottlehead fan for years with Doc's amps. Just started reading about the tape project and I am curious to say the least. I came across a local seller that is willing to sell his A807 (working radio station unit, Professionally maintained). What is a good price for this unit? Is $2K reasonable.

Thanks
Jeff

Hi Jeff, welcome to the place where no one has any first hand knowledge of 807's. The silence was deafening and although I can't help you, I know that there are a couple of guys who can help with 807 specific questions. In general, radio stations will have retired their machines years ago. This means that the professionally maintained stuff is probably meaningless to a point. Most radio stations have service contracts with a service tech who would make regular visits to adjust/clean and repair the equipment being used there. The 807 could have been serviced just before it went into storage and just a few year latter, would need an overhaul to get it working up to spec. It depends on the station and staff as to the condition of the machine. In the best case, it could have been a back-up that was never really used. The worst case, it could be the machine that another was backing up which would eventually be driven into the ground. The good news is that it's local. Price wise, it seems kind of high unless it's been refurbished. If your looking for something to get into the Tape Project, it's definitely high.

Thanks Ironbut for the very helpful information. I thought it was a good deal and saves me shipping cost to Canada. I read a bit more posts and will go with the suggestions to go with a known working machine and Doc's mods, possibly Technics RS series or something better if I could afford it.

I am sure I will have more questions later :)

Thanks again,
Jeff
