Technics RS1700 Replacing the reverse idler pully bearings
« on: July 17, 2008, 04:04:57 PM »
Guys
Anyone out there have any tips for changing the bearings in the reverse idler ? Mine have the ocassional squeek.
A drop of turbine oil took care of the problem for now, but Im thinking I should go on and just replace both bearings.
It appears that they are pressed in, not a tight fit though, they should be easy to push out.
Im thinking replace with an ABEC7, it looks like the original bearings were standard bearings.
I allready replaced the tension arm bearings with ABEC5's the originals were toast.
Also going to replace all the zillions of electrolytics, any suggestions? Im thinking going Panasonic or Nichicon not sure of the type, thinking lower resistance types.

A press is your best bet, but you can also get the new ones in with a socket sized just slightly smaller than the OD of the bearing and some careful tapping with a hammer. The old "hot outside part/cold inside part" trick can help a little to open up the tolerance.

Thanks for the tips, I have now replaced my reverse idler bearings with ABEC 7 bearings, very smooth no noise whatsoever.
Now on to changing the electrolytics out board by board, Im starting with the power supply board.
I plan on testing each replacement cap before i change them out, I dont want any problems in the future.
I will be using audio grade caps in all the signal boards.
In the meantime I am going to replace the brakes, I an find very similar material to what was used originally.
