Technics 1500 / 1506 head nest interchangeability question
« on: September 18, 2009, 09:46:33 AM »
Hello,

I have a Technics 1500 2TK record / 4TK play deck. A friend has a head nest for a 1506 4TK record / 2TK play he no longer needs. I only use 1500 for playback, and I would like to know if these two head blocks are interchangeable.

Many thanks,

Ray

Hi Ray,
Welcome to the forum.
Yes, the headblocks of the 1500us and the 1506 are all interchangeable. The locations of the playback head are switched and the record (erase?) head is a different format. In fact, the headblock and and the nametags are the only things different about the two models.
You would be advised to check all the adjustments to be sure that everything lines up right for the best performance but you should be able to just plug and play.

I actually have a 1506 which was modified by the Bottlehead folks. Part of that was putting in a new head block, which was from a 1500. So my 4tr playback head is on the left and the 2tr playback head is on the right, the reverse of 1506. Mine is playback only and I have dummy erase and record heads.   Larry

The advise given to you (on your new headblock) to "check all the adjustments to be sure that everything lines up right" is ok, however if your conclusion is that something is out of alignment, you should never attempt to correct it yourself.  Only an experienced, professional RTR technician (with a large array of specialized test equipment, test tapes, alignment jigs, etc.) is qualified to perform headblock alignments.
