STUDER A80RC recording issue
« on: February 01, 2010, 10:15:16 AM »
Hello techs,

Here is the issue: The ready/safe switched turn the green lights on (on the meter bridge) but when I press rec/play, the rec and play buttons light, but the red lights (on the meter bridge) do not turn on. I her the input signal when pressing input, but the tape remains unrecorded and unerased (both channels).

I replaced the record amps - same result.

I cannot replace the oscillator as I don't have a second one. The oscillator card's leds do not light up and I do not hear any click from the rec/oscillator relays. The oscillator pcb is quite warm after a few minutes of work, mostly around the heat sinked devise.

Any tips?

regards

Problem solved: bad connection at the back multipin connector to the meterbridge.

Thanks for sharing your solution.  Seems this connecter for the meter bridge may be inclined to troubles.  I would like/need a new one but have not figured out a source to get one.

Thanks,

I think this is a standard computer (AMP?) connector - just type the number of pins and google it. Same with other multipin connectors inthere (headblock). Better use the soldering versions. All those are brass - nickel-plated and then gold flash, it would be better to find nickel-less version, but it seems hard, perhaps impossible...

Yes, the wire harness connector for the VU meter is a D-Subminiature type with 37 pin - commonly used in the computer industry.  It's name is DB-37 connector and can be found in Digi-key or Mouser.

If there are issues with reliability with visible problem with the pins, I would replace both male and female sections...however, it's a lot of work.

I would recommend inspecting the pins in male connector to make sure they are straight and properly aligned.  Then, put a litle DeOxit Gold on tips of the pins before reinserting.  I have had similar connection issues with one of my A80RC MkII when it arrived at my house after resting for years but the DeOxit fixed it for good.
