Studer List returns!
« on: September 07, 2010, 10:00:05 PM »
Good news. The much lamented loss of Fred Thal's Studer list has gotten a reprieve.
According to his first email, it may be necessary to re subscribe when Fred gets a new application going but so far I've already gotten 22 postings in two days.
For those who haven't received the welcome back email, here it is;

"Ok, hi, we?re back.

Did everyone enjoy the intermission?

We are ready to launch Volume Two of the Studer list.

But here are some important changes to note. We are moving over to a new mailing list software application. This affords us a terrific opportunity to update our subscriber roll. Therefore, we will soon ask everyone to re-subscribe to be included in Volume Two. (Should anyone prefer instead to opt-out, they need do nothing further.) Please watch this space for upcoming details on re-subscribing.

A decade has flown by since we started the Studer list and the world of Studer analog tape machines has only gotten crazier. There is no shortage of misinformation available on the web today, and I believe it is the sentiment of this readership that we should strive not only to uphold the standards we created here, but also try to improve on them.

The Studer list will remain moderated. Access will remain freely open to all via a read-only subscription. Posting privileges will be granted, individually, by the list mods. The guidelines for posting will be clear and reasonable. We certainly do not intend to restrict posting, as it is your postings that make the Studer list.

Today, the Studer company many of you once knew, essentially no longer exists, excepting as a brand-name. New acquisition recording to analog tape is becoming so scarce as to be irrelevant. The most critically important role for the best of the surviving analog tape machines is clearly then to help us preserve the vast and irreplaceable collections of audio tape recordings remaining around the globe. But we have increasingly limited resources for tape machine technical support today. This means we need to assess what are the machines most deserving of our preservation efforts.

Therefore we are again strictly limiting the machine families that we will deal with here on the Studer
t. There will be only two: the A820 (all versions including A827) and the A80 / A800 (all versions). To those of you who know Studer analog tape hardware, I expect that the reasons for the above choices are obvious.

I will close for now with a footnote on ATAE. We have re-located the shop from Ukiah to Grass Valley, California. We are presently doing an inventory of the parts department and are putting some clearance items up on eBay, such as new-old-stock capstan motors, including some quite old and rare ones that we earlier rescued from the former Studer Revox America parts collection that was housed in Nashville. Check it out and if you buy from us, let us know you are a Studer list reader!

Thanks for reading.

Steve:

Here's a dumb question. Brian Tucker used to be the US sales rep for Studer for something like 20 or so years. Know he used to be into R2R. Would he maybe be another source of parts/info since he knows many of the people in Europe?

Hey Myles,
Sorry, I don't know Brian.
I would think that finding someone in the EU (or with contacts there) could save you some pretty serious money and maybe find some of the more elusive items for Studers.
