You could measure the voltage. I am considering LED's on my Otari deck.

Hello guys,

For the Sony, I suggest you send an email to Vintage Electronics. He works on lots of Sony decks and can probably tell you what bulb/lamp you need.
Also, always buy enough bulbs to replace all the ones your machine uses (I aways double that since they're so cheap and you never know when the bulb you need will become unavailable).
BTW, it's always best to look at the bulb/lamp you need to replace. I've got a box full of purchasing mistakes for old electronics to prove the wisdom of this suggestion.

Regarding the Otari;
If your machine is a 5050 take a look at this tutorial on replacing the lamps on your machine. The replacement bulbs suggested are a tiny bit brighter but work perfectly fine.

You can buy them here;

Thanks for the usefull information,have sent e-mail to them.
I have managed to get exact replacements 12volt 85ma from maplin in the uk,part pg83e,in there wisdom they have just stopped supplying them,had to go to several stores to get a supply.they were the same size and brightness with the same leads.

Thanks Steve, I just read your other post and poked around both sites. They are both a wealth of knowlege, as are you.
