It could be that the tape you are trying to play is so sticky the reel motor can't get turning. Try giving the reel a little help to get started. If that doesn't seem to be the problem try taking the reels off the machine, hold down both tension roller arms down and see if the takeup reel motor will start to spin when you punch play. If the idlers are engaging but the reel motor isn't spinning, I would next look in the back to see if any plugs have come off their pins on any of the circuit boards.

Try again tomorrow after it sits overnight, powered down. If it won't play unless it's turned on for a while there might be a bad capacitor in the reel motor control circuit. But - I'd suggest a thorough CLA (clean, lube, adjust) before you start any electronic troubleshooting. If it's been sitting for a long time the bearing surfaces may just be gunked up with old lube that got a little less gunky as the machine sat at idle and got a little warmer.

Ok Doc your the doc.....but the only reason why i thought about electronics is because when its cold and not been powered on go to hit play the pinch rollers do not engage.....nothing happens when it sits powered on for a few hours go to hit play and the pinch rollers engage and it starts to play....but i am guessing not at the correct speed.....also ff and rewind worked when cold but started off ok and progressively got slower and that was with either going ff or rewind...

thanks for your help if you have other things to suggest...please by all means..
