Columbia R2R rewinds, won't play
« on: July 16, 2008, 08:53:17 AM »
I have a Columbia (model C690TR) reel to reel player.  I do not know anything about these machines.  I opened the case and turned it on.  When there is no tape on the reels they both appear to spin fine.  When a tape is loaded the front reel does not pull the tape through, doesn't seem to be enough tension.  The rewind reel works fine, retracting the tape and playing it backwards.

I did a bit of research online and found that Columbia was made by Denon (a Japanese company).  There is just not a lot of information out there regarding this machine.

Any help and/or recommendations on where to get it fixed would be greatly appreciated.  I am located in Central North Carolina (in case you know someone around the area that repairs them).

Hi Rebecca. welcome to the forum. I'm not familiar with either the Columbia or the Denon machines ( although I've seen picture of one Denon reel to reel). If you could post a link to a picture of one, it would facilitate any step by step that one of us could provide.
BTW If we get it working for you, what are you going to call yourself (nospin)?

Ok,.. that took a few times. But here's an image of Rebecca's Columbia. It looks like an oldie with a missing selector knob. I would bet that under that top cover is a capstan that's very gummed up and stuck.
Try unscrewing those 2 phillips head screws and there should be a rubber wheel (pinch roller) just opposite a steel rod (capstan). When the machine is in play mode, the pinch roller should be in contact with the capstan (which should be turning). The tape is captured between these two and together, they control the tape speed. Many times, as a tape machine isn't used for long periods of time, the grease that lubricates the motion of the pinch rollers to and from the capstan will harden. Sometimes you can get it to work again just by moving the roller by hand and kinda working it back and forth until its free enough to 'pinch' the tape against the capstan. Give that a try and if it doesn't work or when you remove the head cover it doesn't look anything like I've described, snap another photo of just that area and send it to me.

The knob broke when I turned it (shattered into a few pieces).  I will give it a try to get the capstan turning and let you know.  Thanks for posting the picture, I tried and could not get it to show.  I believe this particular model is from the Vietnam time period.

Alright, I opened it up and took pictures.  I don't see the part you were talking about.

Hi Rebecca, sorry for the delay, I didn't see that you'd edited your last post but now after looking at the pictures I believe I can hazard a guess on your problem. In the center bottom of your machine is a single head. It's the squared off metal "can" with the wires coming out of the top(has the model number printed on it). Just to the right of that is the capstan. It is the rod with a brass washer on it. Just below that is another rod sticking out. It has a hole in the end and a reddish  washer on it. That hole is where a screw that secures a rubber pinch roller should be. both are missing. You may be able to have one made if someone has the specs of that part but that is doubtful. Your only other option would be to send the entire machine to someone to have one custom built and fitted. I'm not sure if this machine has some personal value for you, but either alternative still wouldn't assure that the machine would work. Most of these types of portables have very little resale value. They were pretty popular in the '60s and just about every home electronics company made one or two. My parents bought one each for my sister (a decent little Sony) and myself (a really awful little Aiwa since they knew I'd take it apart and destroy it in a matter of days) and we used to record stuff off the radio or TV (with the microphone taped to the speaker). Those little mono recorders seemed like magic at the time.
