Carmina Burana
« on: August 01, 2008, 04:53:03 PM »
This is a work that I would love to hear on a Tape Project issue.

Here are three great performances, but I would be hard pressed to recommend one over another since they all have something to recommend them.  Sorry, I don't have the catalogue numbers handy.

Stokowski - Capital
Muti - EMI
Previn - EMI

I would be interested in other recordings that people could recommend.

I'll second this one. I'm not familiar with the Muti but know the Previn pretty well. Regarding the Stokowski, finding a decent sounding master must be tough considering the sound of the reissues I've heard ( could be the fault of making a stereo version though ). It was recorded in 1958 to mono tape but past that, I'm not sure of any details.

The Stokowski issue that I have is stereo.  It was originally released in a double record box set and the sound is very good.  It is more atmospheric than either of the EMI recordings, but it doesn't seem to have the dynamics that they do.  And you are right, the re-issue, which I think was done on Seraphim, has truly lifeless sound.
